The section is headed `Brod to the glacier lake and the sheep shelter' and the instructions read `the path is well marked because of the frequent traffic of horses to the sheep shelter and you just keep on going past the fields of wild raspberries. After 4km or so you will come across a series of waterfalls.' Wild raspberries, horses, glacier lake, waterfalls - this must be a guide to some paradise or faeryland. It makes me want to pack my bags immediately and set off for this magical country.
But in fact I live here already, and have been in Kosovo for much of the last 5 years. I still take the Bradt guide with me whenever I go out of Pristina - the book gives information on each major town or area in Kosovo as well as seven suggested day trip itineraries and four hiking trips - Štrpce/ Brezovica, Bajgora, Dragash, and the Rugova valley. It also has useful information on getting around by public transport.
I love this book because I love Kosovo, and because it's written by people who seem to love Kosovo too. It's the only English guide focusing solely on Kosovo, and it updates the original Bradt Guide to Kosovo, published three years ago. This version includes information on new restaurants (over 200 of them), bars and more than 100 hotels, and up-to-date details of tourist sites, as well as an extended language section which gives useful phrases in Serbian and Albanian (both the standard language and the Gheg dialect which is what you'll mainly hear here).
As well as 20 maps and the town-by-town information you'd expect from a guidebook, the Bradt guide offers a readable history section and some fascinating info boxes focusing on elements of Kosovo society - figures from the country's history, local customs, the role of the diaspora, the Gorani community, the Dervish. There is also an inspiring Travelling Positively section which gives suggestions for `giving something back' to Kosovo.
Savvy independent travellers have already discovered that Kosovo is not just a war. This book has been a part of that slow realisation of a fascinating and beautiful tourism destination.
