Product Description

Album Description

"They refer to their style somewhere between summer house and synthesizers as 'romantic rock music', getting by without strained comparisons with other musicians," read a press release which Metronome Records sent to journalists and concert promoters in January 1978, explaining the Novalis phenomenon. "Musical coordinates such as '5 degrees 7 minutes of Wagnerian ingredients and 40 bar 7 chords of improvisation, decibel level medium, rock music turning towards success' may set them in the same vein as a few of their counterparts. The elements that make Novalis and their music unique cannot be condensed into a few data. You have to hear and experience them." Almost unctuous words about an album which in fact did make the band’s unique music audible and allowed the listener to experience it: Konzerte, Novalis' first live LP, which sold more than 50,000 copies within a few months of its release in summer 1977.

Novalis were founded in autumn 1971 by bassist Heino Schünzel and guitarist Jürgen Wenzel, whose choice of band name was inspired by the early romantic poet, Karl Friedrich Von Hardenberg (1772 – 1801). The original line-up included organist Lutz Rahn and drummer Hartwig Biereichel, who were later briefly joined by guitarist Carlo Karges.

Biereichel succeeded in dispelling his band mates' concerns about inadequate equipment for the recording – a Soundcraft 24-channel mixing desk and a four-track Revox A 700 tape recorder. Two sound signals directly from the mixing desk and two room mics in the venue helped to record an in every respect unvarnished, honest album which centred on the band's classics, such as 'Es färbte sich die Wiese grün', 'Wer Schmetterlinge lachen hört' and 'Sommerabend'. Biereichel: "Technically speaking, the recordings were pretty raw, but also extremely authentic. The songs on Konzerte simply came across much better than the studio versions." After a careful selection process, the material was mixed at Conny Plank’s renowned studio. In addition to the LP version, this CD features previously unreleased bonus material: the tracks 'Irgendwo, Irgendwann', 'Wenn nicht mehr Zahlen und Figuren' and 'Astralis' were recorded at a concert at the Winterhuder Fährhaus in December 1978.
