Format: Audio CD
This album is nothing short of breathtaking. From the outset, Mika Vainio hooks you and reels you in.

At that point, it's too late for you. You will slowly dissolve, and your runny goo will merge with the music and take you to the after-world. Trust me, there WILL be one there waiting for you.

With good headphones on - and I mean GOOD - you fall into a beautiful musical coma. The sounds just reach for your soul, your imagination, then take you on a journey through space and time into a musical universe - which you always knew existed - which deep down, you always HOPED existed - but never quite found..

Until now.

It manages to soothe every musical wish, as your subconscious is guided along a colourful path, which somehow, you telepathically 'will' into being. Everywhere you want it to go - it reads your mind - and follows you there.

Only a work of true genius can do that. An album which submerges you into the depths of the most expansive and expressive and vibrant landscapes imaginable is rare. But in this instance, it hits the ball clean out the park, and into orbit.

I am gutted, in a way, that the only people who will listen to this, who will truly appreciate it, will be those who follow this narrow genre. That's sad in a way. It would appeal to many more, or at least should appeal to many more, if only it found them. It deserves to cross their path.

Anyway. To everyone else, if you only buy one album this month, and you are into evolving minimalist ambient works - make sure it's this one. It will make you cry. And the brilliant thing about that, is.. you won't know why. It just will.

It's in the top fifty albums ever made, by anyone. Ever.

True masterpiece.

Headphone Commute Review 13 April 2014
By Headphone Commute - Published on
Format: Vinyl
Ø (as I pronounce it like the letter ‘o’ as in ‘bird’ in English), or rather Berlin-based Mika Vainio, who was, of course, none other than one half of the influential Finnish Pan Sonic duo (along with Ilpo Väisänen), spinning off in the late 90s a rather rich solo career. It seems that this particular moniker is reserved for releases on Vainio’s own Sähkö Recordings (co-founded with Tommi Grönlund), while his real name graces labels such as Pan, Touch, Raster-Noton, Editions Mego and Blast First Petite. Konstellaatio is a very minimal, experimental, yet accessible album [there's also a big chance that this type of music has really grown on me throughout the years]. The theme is slow evolving, quiet exploration of expansive sound, featuring some familiar digital Pan Sonic percussive elements. The frequency range is immense, and as spacey pads glide towards immeasurable universe, so do the sub-bass drops plunge into its depths. One of the tracks, “Kesäyön Haltijat” begins with four seconds of incredibly high pitch sound [I even ripped the headphones off my head the first time], before it treads into a dark and suspenseful territory of sparse rhythms and scattered synths, as if my ears tune into a colossal and infinite space, where the sound rebounds in void. Composing delicate sculptures and fast engineering feats, Vainio reassures all his loyal followers once more, why this particular space is undoubtedly his. Highly recommended for discerning ears. Make sure to listen on your best sound system! Oh, and there is a new Pan Sonic album, titled Oksastus out on Kvitnu!
