Product Description

Sports Island lets up to four players compete against one another simultaneously in ten different disciplines to test their reactions and skills to the limit.

The type of event players can compete in starts with the more familiar, like Football and Basketball and moves right across the athletic spectrum taking in Badminton, Curling and Figure Skating!

Each event will require users to master the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in various ways as the demands of each event takes shape. Archery requires a steady hand to keep the Wii Remote while a twist of the wrist in the Snowboarding section will see the player navigate the slopes with consummate ease. In Figure Skating players need to keep to the music and correctly time all of their jumps and spins in order to impress the judges.

There will be multiple game modes in addition to the obvious single and multiplayer options, but it is the latter where this game will really come into its own. The full list of events within Sports Island is: Beach Volleyball, Snowboard Cross, Badminton, Basketball, Curling, Figure Skating, Archery, Supercross, Football and Kart Racing.

Ten different sports to partake in:

  • Beach Volleyball
  • Snowboard Cross
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Curling
  • Figure Skating
  • Archery
  • Supercross
  • Football
  • Kart Racing
  • Unique use of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk
  • 4-player simultaneous play
  • Arcade style family orientated title

Fun:
This game is a selection of sports mini games that are very much inferior to Wii sports. None of the games are exciting to play and with the absence of cheering crowds egging you on it feels like there's not much point in making an effort to win. The circuit races follow very plain routes with very bare environmental decoration, the players in the football seem like they're running through treacle. The Curling is incredibly tedious.
In the Ice Skating you use the nunchuck to skate and you twist the remote to perform spins and jumps, admittedly this control system works very well but any potential for freedom of expression is quickly snatched away by the rigid requirement that you must follow a pre-set path and do pre-set jumps in a pre-set order. The Basketball also has quite a good control system but the absence of crowd noise, shoe squeaks and a commentary dissolves the fun out of it.
Personally I prefer targets and something to aim for in Sports games and this game provides nothing of that.
I would not recommend this game but I would look for more well designed, graphically realistic and involving titles that use some of the control methods demonstrated in Sports Island.

Fun:
This game is already out in the US as Deca Sports by Konami. Sadly as you will see with most of the reviews, the game does not live up to the expectation.
The control responses when playing the game are slow (especially the football and badminton games) and some of the games go really quickly (like the snowboarding).
You can't even use your own Mii character which is shame.

If you are expecting Wii Sports 2, this game is not the one.

Good family fun! 15 Jun 2008
Fun:
OKay, I will admit this isn't Wii Sports 2 but Sports Island seems good enough to hold us over until Sports 2 arrives - if and when it does. I got this for my husband for Father's Day and we've spent a good portion of the day playing it and having lots of fun. The snowboarding, motorcyling and go carts are very similar but they are fast and it is great fun to race each other in these games. The Archery is good as is the ice skating....really all the games are enjoyable. They are short and fairly simple but you can adjust each game to beginner, normal or advanced levels. We haven't had any problems with the controls being slow and the animation, while simple, is really clear and colorful. Our 4 year old is getting there with the controls and this is the type of game for casual players who just want to have some fun and some laughs - and one that the whole family can enjoy.
