Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Preview

The most noticeable difference between Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and its successful predecessor Circle of the Moon is that in the new game the castle will be a lot easier to see. Brighter graphics enhanced for the GBA's screen, as well as some new special effects, made this a favourite at US trade show E3. Harmony's story follows a descendant of Simon Belmont named Juste, who's on a quest for Dracula's relics; Konami says it's adding RPG elements that will allow characters to gain experience during the game. And the game has one cool feature that, in a perfect world, would come standard on all GBA games: a save-anywhere feature.

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest game on the gameboy., 9 Sep 2003
This review is from: Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (Video Game)
First impressions are good. Lush colourful graphics a fine control system the moments when you first enter the castle are the best. It is around about the third hour of play that you realize the game has some major flaws.

On a superficial level the music is pretty poor and doesn't really have the traditional Castlevania tunes. What is worse is that the level design is utterly baffling. There are times when it seems that you have been everywhere and done everything. Even after puzzles are solved you are still left with the feeling -how was I suppposed to know that. Even when you know the way you still have alot of backtracking to do.
Before you finish the games confusing castles of this game its most likely you'll be sick of most the game areas. The monsters are not that hard but finding your way around is.

This Castlevainia adventure isn't one of the as it gets too tedious to soon. It doesn't have the killer atmoshphere of Castlevaina 4 or the level of involvment that Symphony of the Night had. Under the presentation you realize that there is very little zest in the title.

It is entertaining but there are some truly excellent games out there. My advice is buy them first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fixes some mistakes, makes a few others..., 20 July 2003

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was derided by many for its poor visuals, workmanlike controls, and bread-and-butter gameplay. It was also lauded for its varied magic system, impressive music, fluid pacing and solid challenge.

It's a bit amusing, then, to find that Harmony of Dissonance has impressive visuals, slick controls, charming combat, alongside a fairly obsolite magic system, poor music, off-kilter pacing, and is fairly easy.

Nevertheless, this is an atmospheric, fun, and (for the most part) engaging adventure, which is hard to escape once it gets a hold of you. Like Circle of the Moon, it's easy to forgive the flaws and appreciate the love that has been lavished upon the game, from the little optional quests to the alternative endings.

Reccomended.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent game, but far too easy, 15 April 2003

I bought this having really enjoyed the first Castlevania title for the GBA, which was a great game and provided at least 15 hours gameplay. So what about Harmony of Dissonance?

To put it frankly, this game is far too easy. I completed it in just over 6 hours - which isn't a patch on the original. The reason for this? There are not enough enemies - about a third of the castle is just empty. And the bosses are a walkover, such as the giant slime blob, or the golem. Whereas I died several times in fighting those from Circle of the Moon, these guys were a walkover.

This is a shame, as Harmony does bring a few good improvements to the series. Graphically, it's outstanding; colourful without being garish in what is Dracula's castle after all. The spell systen which replaces the cards is much easier to use. There are also a couple of good twists in the game which I won't reveal.

My final point is another gripe. You can complete Harmony of Dissonance without having to fight Dracula! This may sound a bit geeky, but battling the fanged one is essential to Castlevania.

Verdict: a good game, but you'll be left wanting more once you've finished it, which won't take long...
