The latest installment of the Castlevania series on Playstation sees Simon of the Belmont clan go to do battle with the Lord of Darkness, Dracula himself.
This game has little to offer in terms of gameplay but for those who enjoy the retrospect, buy it now! If you are also a fan of the series, Castlevania Chronicles is a game not to be missed. Have you ever wondered where those monsters out of Castlevania: SOTN have come from? Well nows your chance to find out! From regenerating Blood Skeletons to Spear Guards and Ghosts, all the classic monsters are here and much more!
Simon's moves are limited, but what do you expect? He's only one of the Vampire Killers from the Belmont Clan! He can jump and whip, but the nice thing about this is he can whip in any direction. Is there an annoying bat above your head waiting to take your head off? One slick press of x and up and he's dead. Or are there Merman trying to grab your feet? Another slick push of x and Down and he's mince meat.
The music is great! Ranging from the arranged version of Vampire Killer, one of the greatest Dracula songs of all time, which is upbeat and gives you a strong sense of killing, to Simon's Theme, which gives actually makes you feel sorry for Dracula's curse, and even take pity on him for a split second, the music blends in perfectly. There's even that beautiful sense of nostalgia when you come face to face with the Dark Lord himself, but I won't say why.
Apart from the fact that the game is relatively short, I would only reccomend this game for people who love Castlevania, and because it's under 20 quid, who can complain?
Perhaps you can be the one to show Dracula the way to hell once and for all?

5.0 out of 5 stars X68000 CV conversion for Playstation 16 Nov 2003
"Chronicles" is a remake/remix of the original Castlevania, released originally on Sharp's Japan-only PC X68000, now available for Playstation. And it's excellent.
Spot-on Castlevania controls, interesting and diverse level design with various challenges other than mere platform-jumping to overcome (the logs on rising water will keep that pulse racing), very rich 2D artwork, and good re-arrangements of classic CV songs. All-in-all the perfect old-school Castlevania experience, for PS1. This will keep you playing far longer than the GBA Castlevanias, mostly because it's a lot harder!
Great though CV X68 is, Konami, it would be nice to see Symphony of the Night reissued as well!
