Product Description

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 will mark a new beginning for the popular series, with an all-new engine allowing for the most comprehensive advance for the Pro Evolution Soccer series since its inception. The new engine has been in development for a number of years and uses Kojima Production's renowned FOX Engine at its core, extended and enhanced to match the bespoke and complex demands of a football title.

TrueBall Tech: This allows the player to trap or knock on a pass using the analogue stick with detailed barycentric physics determining the weight shift of the player and the height and speed of the pass, as to how the player's body will automatically shape to receive it.

Motion Animation Stability System (M.A.S.S.): Simulates the bodily contact between multiple players within bespoke animations that segue seamlessly into each other. Dependent on factors such as their size and power, players will stumble but instantly recover if clipped.

Heart: Defining what makes football so engrossing is difficult. Heart aims to recreate the effects of team support, both on an individual player basis and across the entire team.

PES ID: PES 2013 set a new bar for realism, with its inclusion of the Player ID system. PES 2014 takes this even further with twice as many stars featuring bespoke animations and AI.

The Core: Visually PES 2014 will benefit from an incredible level of acuity, from the weave of the kits, through to facial movement, and a new animation process that offers slick segues from one move to the next, with no pauses or restrictions on control. Stadia will be faithful to real-life, with the entrances to the pitches recreated, crowds that move during the course of the game The new system also allows for a new light-mapping effect, adding a natural look to the proceedings. The flow of a match has also been improved, with tactical decisions made on the fly, and the removal of cut scenes after specific events.

Team Play: Via the new game's innovative Combination Play users can set up a variety of different tactics in key areas of the pitch using three or more players. These players will make very different off-the-ball runs to exploit holes in the defence or midfield, using the flanks, curved runs, or overlapping play to make themselves available.

If you are a standing Pro Evo fan of a certain age, chances are that you stuck with the series despite all your friends going over to FIFA with all its bells and whistles, not to mention functioning online gameplay, because: a) you have never really liked FIFA: b) You preferred the much more dynamic, fluid, and exciting gameplay in Pro Evo. Well, the bad news with PES 2014 is that it seems that Konami have been looking very closely at FIFA and how the game is constructed, and to a certain extent totally ripped it off (much like EA did with Pro Evo in order to finally get a half decent footie game out themselves). That is not too say that PES 2014 is just like FIFA, it isn't, but subjectively, it feels very similar to play. By that I mean, slow, unresponsive, over-burdened with fancy tricks, and worst of all, completely unsatisfying to score in. I have had fewer than 10 games on it so admittedly, I don't really know the game so well, but the problem is, I just don't feel any motivation to get to know it.

Konami have completely thrown the baby out with the bathwater I am afraid and I doubt that they are going to find it again.

This game promised a lot but failed to deliver. The Fox engine is fantastic and the gameplay in general is excellent and way superior to the arcadey and kiddish Fifa, however the game is besot with bugs and quirks and you can feel it is every bit a rushed game. Hopefully the second patch will fix many issues, but otherwise it's not worth the money, I expect Konami to improve it and make it what it should of been with the next few iterations as this new engine has massive potential, just needs some proper development work done to it!

When I first bought this latest version of Pro Evo, despite what I had been reading about this effectively being Konami laying ground work for next year's game, I was willing to give it a chance. I have been staunchly Pro Evo over FIFA since 2002 and continue to believe that Pro Evo remains a much more satisfying game to play than FIFA, with superior gameplay and generally more varied and fun matches.

I would maintain that even with this version - as opposed to the flat, repetitive, dull games of FIFA I am forced to play against some of my friends who have long given up on Konami's efforts (including some who were also previously die hard Pro Evo fans) - I still would say Pro Evo is the more fun of the two.

However, and this is becoming an increasingly strong "however" in recent years, Konami continue to test the patience of those who remain loyal to it. This is, quite frankly, the worst Pro Evo in many, many years. I am actually struggling to figure out what steps forward this Pro Evo has taken - yes, I have watched the Konami videos telling me about all the great new touches, such as 360 passing, players sweating, etc etc. All very exciting.

Yet, I switch on a game with menus more basic than even International Superstar Soccer for the Super Nintendo and then try out the various game modes only to find out that, rather than take even at least minor steps forward, the game goes backwards. It's not the licences or lack of stadium etc which are frustrating even - it's the basic things which are completely unconnected with the licences that Konami have dumbfoundingly failed to address / have removed.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's a bad en! 21 Oct 2013

Konami would do well to go back in time around PES 5 and build on that gameplay engine. There's just no fun in this game whatsoever, it's frustating trying to defend as you don't feel as though you're in control of your players - even with the super cancel button.

This is the last straw for me, as a long standing loyal ISS/PES fan it's time to say goodbye this time out. Back to 2013 online :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish! 20 Oct 2013

Having owned almost all previous PES games, this one is awful, feels unfinished, sticky, wooden 'like' to play. Complete waste of money, I have tried this for over a week, and today I uninstalled it, It's going on Ebay and I will try Fifa?? Failing that, I will reinstall my PES 2013. Like 99% of the other reviewers on here - don't buy it, it's quite simply 'rubbish'!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very very frustrating game 2 Nov 2013

I actually quite like the game play mechanics and behind all the bad there is a great game underneath. the problem is, you get no time on the ball whatsoever the cpu opposition press you like supermen for 90 minutes. You are pretty much forced to play one touch passing as you spend even a second on the ball an opposing player is rushing you and taking the ball of you unless you release it as soon as you get it. Difficult to find team mates with passes too, and again opposition pretty much intercept and read everything you do. It's just crazy bad. I've been playing pro for years and i'm a pretty decent player, but this version is horrible to play. You want to get some passing moves going but you just got no time at all and as for running with the ball forget it.

This game really should be better than it is, and there is no fun playing it. I had a lot more fun playing pes 2011-2013. This version makes my head hurt.
