A great feel good family movie - very rarely found these days, with a great performance from Hritik Roshan, i say its a must watch with the kids.
Heres a true synopsis of the film:
Koi Mil Gaya begins with a genius scientist Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) conducting many experiments to establish contacts with extraterrestrial life. To this purpose he invents many innovative gadgets and succeeds in devising a computer that can transmit message into outer space.
Sanjay keeps sending messages to space hoping to get a response from the extraterrestrials. One day, his foresight becomes reality when as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky. But even before his discovery comes to light before the world, he and his wife Sonia (Rekha) meet with a terrible accident. While Sanjay dies in the accident his wife survives.
Sonia gives birth to a mentally retarded child Rohit who has faces ridicule at every phase of his life because of his abnormality.
However, Rohit (Hrithik) grows up to be a compassionate guy who finds friendship in his lone companion Nisha (Preity Zinta).
One day, while dabbling with his father’s old gadgets Rohit discovers an old computer. He calls Nisha to help him use it. Not realizing the consequences, the two keep on experimenting with the device. Little do they know that they are sending signals out into the space!
What happens afterwards is bizarre and paranormal. The whole town witnesses a blackout and an incandescent glowing sky. Some even sight a spaceship.
Strange phenomenon begins to take place in and around the town. For instance, a set of footprints belonging neither to humans nor any animal is found. While everybody is at loss for the answers, Nisha and Rohit think they might have a clue.
With its novel theme and storyline Koi Mil Gaya breaks the Bollywood stereotype that doesn’t go beyond mushy romances and loud action thrillers. Rakesh Roshan seems to have got his finger on audience’s pulse and has delivered just what a viewer needed.
In the first place it was a gambit to show the protagonist of the film Rohit (Hrithik) as a mentally retarded boy who is subject to ridicule and mockery for the major portion of the first half of the movie. In addition, Rakesh puts in some spicy ingredients like Hrithik’s one-sided romance for Preity. And the introduction of the alien at the interval point does raise expectations of the second half.
The latter half of the movie sees the transformation of an abnormal boy into a hero after he is touched by the extraterrestrial being. Then follow some of the sequences that are bound to catch viewers’ fancy.
For instance, the scene when weakling Rohit is empowered and becomes physically super-strong with his biceps tearing apart his shirt will certainly appeal to kids.
Another highlight is the basketball match that shows once-subdued Rohit crushing his arrogant opponents.
Besides these, the movie does have some dramatic moments – like the emotional outburst by Rekha soon after Rajat Bedi and his friends assault Hrithik. Equally moving is the scene when the computer teacher insults Hrithik in the second half. Hrithik's subsequent dialogues show that he has grown up as an actor.
Koi Mil Gaya undoubtedly belongs to Hrithik Roshan who seems to have got under the very skin of his character. The conviction with which he plays the mentally challenged boy in the first half is surely worth praising. Not only does the actor deliberately distort his facial expressions while speaking his dialogues, he also brings about a garbling accent in his voice. And then he transforms into a superhuman (in the second half) with quicksilver ease.
