Rakesk Roshan’s Kol Mil Gaya is the story of Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) who shows the world that friendship is truly universal. Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) is a scientist obsessed with establishing contact with extraterrestrial life. He invents many innovative gadgets ‘til he finally succeeds in creating a computer that can transmit messages to space. His foresight becomes reality when as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky. But before Sanjay can enjoy his success, his wife Sonia (Rekha) and he meet with a horrific accident where Sonia survives but Sanjay loses his life.

Sanjay’s son Rohit is born, a mentally challenged child who faces ridicule in every phase of his life. His lone companion is Nisha (Preity Zinta) whose compassion draws her towards Rohit. One day Rohit discovers his father’s old computer and calls Nisha to help him use it. Both of them are completely fascinated by the images and instructions that appear on the screen and relentlessly experiment with the gadget, not realizing the impact this would have. The whole town witnesses a blackout and a bizarre phenomenon … in an incandescent glowing sky … a colossal spaceship is sighted. However, more strange findings were in store for Rohit’s town – a pair of footprints not belonging to man or animal is found. What do Rohit and Nisha find out? Is danger lurking somewhere close? A nation holds its breath …

Kol Mil Gaya is the first sci-fi film made in Hindi, with the finest special effects ever created in Indian cinema. With Kol Mil Gaya, Rakesh Roshan has once again created history after the phenomenal success of Kaho Naa … Pyaar Hai, which catapulted Hrithik Roshan to dizzying heights.

Within seconds of appearing on screen, Hrithik Roshan is absolutely convincing as the mentally deficient Rohit. You can't help but feel that he perhaps drew on his own personal experiences as a youth (Hrithik had a speech impediment and has two thumbs on one hand - not easy when you're a boy). The way he composes himself ensures that Rohit is instantly believable and endearing.

I won't give a plot synopsis as this has been covered in the other reviews, but parallels have been drawn with other western movies - and there's no getting away from the fact that there is a strong influence by American films. The credits which appear at the start of the film look amazingly like the scrolling prologue text at the start of Star Wars, the communication with the alien ship using tones is very Close Encounters, the alien ship enters the film like a scene from Independence Day, and the similarities with E.T are numerous (hiding the alien away from adults, it being hidden during a bike ride, etc). There's even a hint of Rain Man when Rohit solves a mathematical problem aimed at the top class of the school.

But... this is still very much it's own film. Just because it borrows from other films doesn't mean it has no identity of it's own. The performances by Hrithik and Rekha (Rohit's mum) are powerful. The feeling of a loving mum, protective and proud of her son for being what he is is evident. Preity Zinta plays Nisha, the woman who befriends Rohit and finds his childlike wonder at the world enriches her own life. Her performance is sometimes over-the-top, but never silly. The bond between the two is one of the reasons this film is so compelling.

The film is careful to make sure that Rohit is loveable as he is, and although it's fantastic to see him 'get his own back' when he is given powers by his alien friend Jadoo, it's the genuineness of the character which makes him so charming.

In a nutshell: The film is often a bit camp, the script is obviously aimed at a younger audience, but the films central premise, along with the main characters are strong enough to overcome the weaknesses. I think some will find the film overly long. I personally like long edited films, but an hour could probably be cut out and probably would be if this were released as a mainstream film in western cinemas. I'd love to give this film 4 stars, but I think a better DVD release is required.

The description says that this is digitally remastered but it doesn't look it. It looks as though this is taken straight from a cinema spool, there are film artifacts on screen and even an 'interval' message half way through. This isn't in PAL format either, this is an NTSC disk, so although the disk is multi-region you need to make sure that that your TV and DVD player are compatible. Some nice bonus features would be good too!

GREAT FUN 22 Feb 2004

A great feel good family movie - very rarely found these days, with a great performance from Hritik Roshan, i say its a must watch with the kids.

Heres a true synopsis of the film:

Koi Mil Gaya begins with a genius scientist Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) conducting many experiments to establish contacts with extraterrestrial life. To this purpose he invents many innovative gadgets and succeeds in devising a computer that can transmit message into outer space.

Sanjay keeps sending messages to space hoping to get a response from the extraterrestrials. One day, his foresight becomes reality when as a response to his signals, a spaceship is sighted in the sky. But even before his discovery comes to light before the world, he and his wife Sonia (Rekha) meet with a terrible accident. While Sanjay dies in the accident his wife survives.

Sonia gives birth to a mentally retarded child Rohit who has faces ridicule at every phase of his life because of his abnormality.

However, Rohit (Hrithik) grows up to be a compassionate guy who finds friendship in his lone companion Nisha (Preity Zinta).

One day, while dabbling with his father’s old gadgets Rohit discovers an old computer. He calls Nisha to help him use it. Not realizing the consequences, the two keep on experimenting with the device. Little do they know that they are sending signals out into the space!

What happens afterwards is bizarre and paranormal. The whole town witnesses a blackout and an incandescent glowing sky. Some even sight a spaceship.

Strange phenomenon begins to take place in and around the town. For instance, a set of footprints belonging neither to humans nor any animal is found. While everybody is at loss for the answers, Nisha and Rohit think they might have a clue.

With its novel theme and storyline Koi Mil Gaya breaks the Bollywood stereotype that doesn’t go beyond mushy romances and loud action thrillers. Rakesh Roshan seems to have got his finger on audience’s pulse and has delivered just what a viewer needed.

In the first place it was a gambit to show the protagonist of the film Rohit (Hrithik) as a mentally retarded boy who is subject to ridicule and mockery for the major portion of the first half of the movie. In addition, Rakesh puts in some spicy ingredients like Hrithik’s one-sided romance for Preity. And the introduction of the alien at the interval point does raise expectations of the second half.

The latter half of the movie sees the transformation of an abnormal boy into a hero after he is touched by the extraterrestrial being. Then follow some of the sequences that are bound to catch viewers’ fancy.

For instance, the scene when weakling Rohit is empowered and becomes physically super-strong with his biceps tearing apart his shirt will certainly appeal to kids.

Another highlight is the basketball match that shows once-subdued Rohit crushing his arrogant opponents.

Besides these, the movie does have some dramatic moments – like the emotional outburst by Rekha soon after Rajat Bedi and his friends assault Hrithik. Equally moving is the scene when the computer teacher insults Hrithik in the second half. Hrithik's subsequent dialogues show that he has grown up as an actor.

Koi Mil Gaya undoubtedly belongs to Hrithik Roshan who seems to have got under the very skin of his character. The conviction with which he plays the mentally challenged boy in the first half is surely worth praising. Not only does the actor deliberately distort his facial expressions while speaking his dialogues, he also brings about a garbling accent in his voice. And then he transforms into a superhuman (in the second half) with quicksilver ease.

I guess it's hard to conceive an adorable alien that also seems real. They did their best and have gone for cute but the whole blue thing is a bit cutesy.
Apart from this I'm giving 5 stars just for Hrithik's performance as the developmentally retarded young adult. It is one of the best renditions of someone 'different' by someone adult and of normal intellect I've seen - and he doesnt skip a beat. I see recently that he was a special child/adolescent himself but under treatment for a stammer. His rocket to success in about all movie areas is then even more astonishing. This character needs a warm and open heart and Hrithik's own personality perhaps shines this through well.
Put this together with Dhoom 2 and then Jodha Akbar and you can see what a great acting range he has. Preity Zinta is also very good.
This movie is for the adult with a child in his heart. It relives the sort of ground ET travelled but isn't a copy of that plot. It's a warm enjoyable family movie.
My DVDs quality was fine so there must be variations in versions out there.
