A Sequel worthy of 5 Stars, 20 Sep 2004
I loved the first Kohan game released in 2001. This allows you to take it one step further with the benefit of gorgeous 3D graphics. The game is a RTS with RPG elements, in that you control a number of heroes that gain experience along the campaign. These you can attach to groups as leaders. The game allows you to recruit groups of soldiers from towns, depending on the type of buildings you have created as in most RTS games. The difference, and what makes Kohan so interesting, is that each group of soldiers is made up of 8 individual units. It is within your control to vary which type of units best suit your needs and play style. Do you wish your archers to have cavalry support with healers backing them or additional archers and mage fire? The graphics are beautiful and the continuing ability to configure each unit allows a vast array of strategic options. If you liked the original you will love this. It is fun to play and the system is low in micro-management allowing more time for the action. The best part is the skirmish mode where you can take any of the 6 races and their respective units into a battle for survival. (I have not tried the multiplayer ability but have read that it is as fun). The AI is good and therefore no pushover. As I have found to my cost... 4.0 out of 5 stars
Very original and intelligent game, 17 Nov 2004
Kohan 2 is basically an RTS, where the production and collection of resources (gold, wood, iron, etc) is simplified. You create your towns, outpost and structures(market, library, swordsmith, etc) and then the system will automatically calculate your gain/loss. The focus of the game is on the creation and managament of warriors/mages company and on conquest. A company is a group of soldiers (maximum 8+leader), composed by a leader, a frontline unit, flank unit and support. In this way you can customize your groups and start to send them against the enemies in a particular formation (skirmish, defense, column) and you can order them to protect a particular structure or company. Once in battle, you cannot control the companies anymore and they will fight on its own, thanks to a very good AI. But you can order them eventually to retreat in the supply area where they will re-generate if they suffered losses. The scenarios are various (snow, midland and desert) and there are more than 25 missions in the campaign. The part I appreciate most of the game is the editor: very flexible. It allows you to create your own scenarios and to decide to play a scenario with few units and a big territory to conquest or to simply make a big fight against 2 or more armies (you can make battles against hundreds of units). The AI is good and makes good maneuvering (front attack, attacks to flank, the archers will stay behind, and the mages will heal their companies). Sometimes the clashes are too chaotic, but very spectacular thanks to mages effects (blizzards, thunders, aura effect, etc). I have an Athlon Xp 2600+ and a Radeon 9600 128 Mega: the perfomance is overall satisfying, maybe the game becomes a litte slower in huge battles, but this doesn't affect the playability. In conclusion, differently from Age of Mythology where you have to micromanage economy and citizens, in this original game the economy management is simplified and you must focus on the creation of warrior companies and on conquest. I think this is a very interesting RTS game and I spent many hours enjoying it, exspecially the editor.

Great game but, 15 Nov 2004

Kohan's a great game, the storyline mixed with the RTS gameplay makes it enjoyable for me and I couldnt stop playing the single campain. However, it can be really frustrating because it crashes, you can have an hour or more but other times it can crash every five minutes. Patches are being release and its important to forward the crash logs. Best tip I can say is save, save, save otherwise I would have given it a five star rating.
