Manufacturer's Description

RETURNING FROM THE DEPTHS OF EVIL

Shattering time and space, the venomous Serpent King Orochi kidnapped the DYNASTY WARRIORS and SAMURAI WARRIORS in a scheme to test his might. The heroes eventually defeated Orochi and his menacing army. While the slain Orochi lies in the netherworld, a mysterious alliance is hatching an otherworldly plan so that the Serpent King may rise again. Now a new group of warriors must join forces with history's finest in an effort to stop this evil resurrection.

STORY MODE: THE SAGA CONTINUES...

WARRIORS OROCHI 2 takes place after the events of the original game. The game's main Story Mode features storylines for the kingdoms of Wu, Wei, and Shu, and the SAMURAI WARRIORS, while a new Orochi storyline looks back to the first series of wars to expose some of the Serpent King's secrets. (Includes 2P Co-op)

ADDITIONAL GAME MODES

A new two-player Versus Mode comes action-packed with four different games including "Tag Team" matches that pit individual fighters in lethal head-to-head combat.

Survival Mode is based on the rules of Versus Mode's Tag Team, but designed for a single player. In Survival Mode, each opponent is controlled by the CPU. Various rewards are granted based on the player's total wins.

Free Mode allows you to play any unlocked stage with a team of your choice. The Gallery showcases hundreds of stills of characters and weapons, as well as all of the game's cut scenes.

One of two new stages: The Wuhang Mountains.

TEAM BATTLE SYSTEM IMPROVED

The popular "Team Battle System" lets players create their own three-person fighting unit. At any given time, one warrior will be engaged in battle, while the other two are recuperating; restoring their Life Meters and Musou Gauges.

WARRIORS OROCHI 2 includes two new improvements to the "Team Battle System" controls. When your active character is being attacked, press either the L2 or R2 button (Left Trigger or Right Trigger for the Xbox 360) to have one of your team members defend you. But if the active character's life is low, press both buttons to invoke a coordinated Triple Attack by all three of your team members. Both of these attacks will deplete your Musou gauge.

OVER 90 PLAYABLE CHARACTERS

WARRIORS OROCHI 2 features an overwhelming lineup of over 90 playable characters from both franchises including SAMURAI WARRIORS2 XTREME LEGENDS, plus new characters from Chinese and Japanese history.

Attack Categories and Special Attacks
In the game, all characters belong to one of three Attack Categories (Power, Speed, and Technique). Each of these Attack Categories features a different Special Attack. Awareness of these different offensive strengths will be a vital step towards victory. Each Attack category has its own "Special Attack" plus an "enhanced skill" or a "unique action." Characters in the "Technique" attack category possess all three.

"Special Attacks" are performed by pressing the R1 button.
"Unique actions" are performed by pressing the "Jump" or "Special Attack" buttons in certain situations.
"Enhanced skills" do not require any action by the player.

Attack Category: Power
Each warrior in the Power Category possesses a "Power Attack," which can inflict significant damage or provide a strength boost. These warriors also possess "Hyper Armor" that prevents them from being knocked back by normal and arrow attacks when the player is on the offensive.

Attack Category: Speed
Warriors in the Speed category are adept at "Combination Maneuvers," which can be deployed consecutively from ordinary attacks. Speed warriors can also use the skills Aerial Thrust, propelling them through mid-air, and Aerial Escape, enabling them to jump up and away in mid-attack.

Attack Category: Technique.
The Special Attack for Technique warriors is called "Enhanced Strike." By pressing the R1 button in place of the triangle button in any combination, the effects of the attack will be multiplied, in exchange for using up the Musou gauge. Additionally, Counter Strike can be used by pressing the R1 button directly after taking damage. This produces a powerful counterattack in exchange for using up the Musou Gauge.

Character Attributes
All of the characters possess ten different attributes. These attributes are: Life, Musou Gauge, Offensive strength, Defensive strength, Speed, Combos, Abilities, Weapon strength, Proficiency and Special Attacks (based on character's Attack category)

4.0 out of 5 stars A 'mainstream-friendly' rehash of a good game series, 19 Sep 2008
By Paul Mattis (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Warriors Orochi 2 follows the original in terms of concepts, adding a few new characters and a few updates to the play system, both of which increase longevity; the save from the first will also unlock a few things early to ease your first few goes.

For newcomers, this is a 3D 1 vs. many fighting game with RPG and strategy elements, where you pick a team of three weapon-wielding characters and run around a map killing people, rescuing people, riding horses, doing little missions that involve killing specific people, escorting people somewhere, or reaching a certain place in a time limit. It can be pretty fun! Every character is also based - albeit loosely at times! - on an east Asian deity or real person in east Asian history, which is part of why these games are so popular.

For anyone who follows KOEI's 'Warriors' games because of the loosely-based-on-truth scenarios and characters, be warned; this is a 'Dream Match', with mostly recycled 'Warriors' characters in a nonsense world with a nonsense plot, made up mostly of recycled stages from their origin games with a bit of lava added and most of the unique elements (cannons, forts, elephants, tigers etc) removed. It does mean more genericised gameplay, which can be disappointing when coming to it from Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors, but it still holds its own.

GAMEPLAY
The features - new and old - are pretty much listed in the specs; I won't repeat them. They all make it a very big game, with lots to do, if at first a little tough if you don't know where to go first. It's easier than WO1, certainly; the starting roster features some good characters (Sakon, Tadakatsu, Dian Wei, Orochi...) that are easy to play. As usual you start out slow, and time is your worst enemy in a game where you're often forced to keep your pathetically weak (and often stupid) allies alive to prevent 'Game Over'. Allies are annoying, as they die too quick offscreen, but steal kills and generally get in the way when onscreen.

GRAPHICS
Downgraded a little to allow for more peons on the field, but still good. But there are problems; in large crowds, soldiers do at times disappear and reappear before your eyes, as the PS2 struggles with drawing 50 people at once. And, unfortunately, what you can't see, you very often cannot hit either. Expect enemies off-camera to be unaffected by your ranged attacks, despite being in range. Expect also - why, I don't know - collision detection to disappear just as a cut-scene kicks in, sometimes resetting enemy animation but never yours, leaving you hitting air and exposed. These are all 'Samurai Warriors' game engine problems, and WO2 uses a version of that engine rather than the 'Dynasty Warriors' one.

AUDIO
The voice direction and voice acting is at times poor, with characters like Sun Wukong and Keiji Maeda sounding more like Bill and Ted than legendary deities and heroes; it isn't anybody's fault really, as hours of dialogue costs dollars and rehearsal/actor variety will naturally suffer. The narrator's good though. The music is generally inoffensive rock/techno pieces, mostly recycled from other 'Warriors' games.

OVERALL
If you're a fan of 1 vs. many fighting games, you may love this... but the RPG/Strategy elements (levelling up, protecting allies, etc) may not be your thing, so try before you buy. While it is perhaps KOEI's most accessible/mainstream 'Warriors' game yet, hardcore fans may be disappointed, as there is very little 'truly new content' overall. If, like me, you see each game as a little more of a 'good same', you won't be disappointed.
