G1 Jockey 3 Review,
By Paul Prunty (Limerick, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: G1 Jockey 3 (Video Game)
Bottom line : This game is not for everyone.... But if you are an avid horse racing fan like myself , chances are you'll love it. Basically the game is based around the life of a jockey as you start off as an apprentice and attempt to become champion jockey. As you begin the game there is a long and tedious tutorial on how to ride horses, (which is not as easy as you may think folks!!!) and how you have to negotiate with trainers to get better rides and build up trust with them by riding well for them. Fortunately this tutorial is optional and after you do it once you probably won't need to do it again. After this the real fun begins as you start off riding horses which could best be described as nags, but once you start doing well in your maiden races and Class D's you start being offered better Horses by the trainers at the end of every week. There are 4000 different horses in the game which are updated every year with new 2 year olds, so the lifespan of the game is well....endless as every year you want to be riding the best new horses. Horse racing fans will notice some famous horses which even with their names changed will still know..(ie. Neigh Chapparal, Loch of Gibraltar, Sulamadi) all of which have the same stable colours as they would in the real world. The Graphics are nothing amazing to write home about (still good though) yet after a brilliant ride you have the option of a Replay which really does look like a real Horse race with some wonderful camera shots. 7/10. The race itself is all about tactics as every horse has their own particular style of running (front running, hold up, out the back) aswell as having (or not having) some of the 25 individual horse attributes. You have to adjust bit levels, decide when to kick for home, break well, etc.. etc! 8/10 for actual gameplay. But thats not all... as you progress through the game you have the option of learning new jockey skills , riding horses to workout before races (which can have positive or negative effects). There is also 2 player battle mode. The only major let down for me was the unrealistic jump racing which is long , boring and uneventful with very few falls, and feilds never get strung out like real life. Also DONT START THE GAME ON EASY MODE!!!!. I think they made it a bit too easy...like when is a class D nag ever gonna beat Landseer? Other features include Jockey suspensions, stewards enquieries, ability to become stable jockey for horses you ride well plus more. Koei made this game for racing fans, so dont be bad mouthing this review if you dont like horse racing, I told you not to buy it. But for those racing mad computer game fans.... get out and buy this now!!!

I have been looking for a good horse racing simulation for literally a decade. Along came G1 Jockey and I thought I had struck gold that was until G1 Jockey 3 came along. Make no mistake G1 Jockey is a great deal of fun but for those pondering the move, refinement is all over this product - from head to toe. The new features are fantastic - 1. Controlling of the speed using bit control. 2. Stipendiary stewards objections (Medium and Hard modes) 3. Falling off in hard mode 4. New trial mode where you can setup and try any horse in the database against any other amount of horses. 5. Save the game in the middle of a race meeting - really useful. Your about to ride Hawk Swing (Hawk Wing for those who follow) in a G1 event and you can relax knowing you can restart. 6. Steeple Chase is now part of the game and makes an excellent addition. The graphics are better and the replay mode is great to watch. There is no change to the sound environment which is disappointing but with all the others additions Koei has done a great job. For those who dont follow horse racing --> Imagine racing a different car each time that you have to position correctly and each with a different engine. You are coming down the homestretch and you dont know if you are in a Ferrari or a Mini. Get on board Loch of Gibraltar (Rock of Gibraltar) and you will know what a Ferrari is like. Those who enjoyed G1 Jockey - this is a no brainer. Those who havn't - this is a quality title right up there thats set to take many days and nights away.

Like the previous title in this range, your enjoyment of it comes down to personal taste. If you like games that have immediate benefit then this perhaps isn't for you.If however you like true sports sims and in particular love horse racing you'll adore this remarkable game.Being a fan of the original g1 jocky (g1 jocky 2 in japan)i was eager to try this one out.many new features have been added ,including training for your horses, different horse characteristics and a completely new control system. In the previous game you only had the ability to push ,holdup and whip the horse. The new title still has all these but new features have been added, you can now use the bit to increase the speed, and new whip skills have been introduced(windmill whip, whip while driving etc).Once you get used to these new controls you see what a marked improvement it is over the previous game. The game includes over 4000 horses with very thinly disguised names, racing fans will recognise the likes of rock of gibralter and high chapparel. The purpose of the game is much the same as the first~get rides at different stables, get the best horse and try to become top jocky. The difficulty level is spot on and the graphics are an improvement.Although the dialogue is still not good and the less said about the music the better. The contol system has a simplistic beauty with none of that button bashing, and the speed of the game is just right.Overall i'd say that this game is one of the best and most original on the playstation 2.(I'm off to play it now i'm on a longshot in the Derby)
