Amazon.co.uk Review

If you've never played an earlier version of the game, here's what you need to know: Dynasty Warriors is a fighting game series played from the third-person perspective, where you pick a military general as your avatar and fight across sprawling battlefields. The generals all have distinct personalities and there are a few women characters included too. As you campaign, you collect special items such as the Dragon Amulet which increases your Musou gauge (Musou allows you to enact special, prolonged attacks on multiple enemies). You have bodyguards, you kill enemy generals, and along the way your new skill points increase your weapon's power.

With DW4, there are many new additions, only some of which are successful. Charge attacks and items are souped up and truly improved. For example, equipping a magic orb can cause you to freeze enemies in a block of ice. You can edit characters, but with so many good preset ones to choose from, chances are you won't spend a lot of time working on your own. In addition to a better game engine, there's also the option of one-on-one-duels. The maps are immense compared to previous editions, with a lot more variance in what can happen by the end of your mission.

Even with a significant number of new features, it's debatable whether or not Dynasty Warriors 4 is a true overhaul, or just another release to cash in on the popularity of the franchise. Regardless, it's addictive for reasons that almost defy explanation. You just want to clear this act, to get to the next stage, and to reveal the goodies you've received from killing that big boss. It's as simple as that. And at the moment when you can knock down an entire platoon with a couple of hits, well, then you'll join the ranks of the dedicated. --Jennifer Buckendorff

You can play Dynasty Warriors 4 and you'll be instantly hooked on the impressive graphics, detail and gameplay. DW 4 is hands-down the best in the series yet for a number of reasons. You can battle in all new enviroments, play as brand new warriors and make up ytour own warrior.
DW 4 offers you everything DW 3 had, but it spices it up a lot more for an even more enthralling experience. A major letdown is that the bodies of allies and rivals don't stay where they fall, they just disappear without trace, it would add even more class to the game if the bodies didn't vanish.
Once again, golden oldie levels such as Yellow Turban Rebellion, Hu Lao Gate and Cheng Du have made a third appearance, but this time, they have been split up into three smaller levels so it'll take you longer to get through the whole level.
The Battle still rages on, the Kingdoms of Wei,Shu and Wu still violently face each other on the war torn battlefields of Ancient China and that (...) Lu Bu is still working for Dong Zhuo, can't he take a hint that we kick his arse every time we face him. Can't he just quit while he's ahead.

I've played Dynasty Warriors 3 and the game is like no other. It may look like your typical hack and slash, but the game actually has more thought to it. Your are put in to a role where you have to lead your chosen team to victory and gain the ultimate prize, China. But to inorder to achieve this, you must participate in some certain battles. Your actions will decide the outcome of the battle. Perform well and the battle is in your favour. If you haven't perform well, you will still have to fight, but in a more disadvantaged position. The graphics in DW4 seems to be more crisper than the previous games and some annoying bugs are now fixed (The problem where the soldiers kept disappearing in DW3 is said to be fixed). The music in the game is still in 'rock' form which really doesn't suit to the background of the game. However, it may grow on to you if you play the game for a while. The sounds in DW3 is pretty much average I have to say. Some speeches made by the warriors are quite laughable to be honest. Hopefully they will make the actors a little bit more enthusiastic for DW4. Also there will be more stages and new features like create your own warrior mode! Previous Dynasty Warrior games were unfortunately overlooked and didn't really get the credit it deserved. Hopefully DW4 will changed that. For DW fans this game is a must. For the curious, I recommend that you should try it out for a bit. You may end up liking it!

when i got dw2 i thought the grapics and gameplay was amazing, but then DW3 came out and that was loads better. when i heard about DW4 i needed to buy it, firstly i rented it then i brought it. DW4 was amazing compeared to any other DW game. you get three more characters in DW4. the archers are alot easyier to kill then in DW3 i think. thats about it but if you like or are interested about the three kingdoms then i would say buy DW4 and not kessen as it would confuse you because its not based on the three kingdoms.

This is a brilliant game. No questions asked.
No really. I was a fan of the seires but this blew me away. It has more characters, battlefields and costumes than expected and is truly enjoyable.
For a frustrated person home from school or work this game offers relief in the ability to KO 1000's of men in one battle. These battles are huge and event riden.
The game contains stats and build up but you can ignore this completly if you wish. It will not ruin a game if you are not into this.
If you buy this it will take over your life. It is massive and the real storyline is fantastic. If you are still not sure buy Dynasty Warriors 3 as a test. If you think that is good, you will love this.
Choose your favourite looking character (Lu Bu all the way!!), take a deep breath and prepare to surrender your life to the greatest battler ever to exist (on ANY platform).

I,m a die hard DW fan, I've had 2,3,XL and now 4. This is so much better than three it looks like a whole new game. The orb system is awesome! Lightning shoots bolts down on every person around you in S,S,T and Zhou Tai is the most awesome character. The graphics look so smooth as well, in DW3 and XL they looked, well blocky almost. In 4 it is much more interactive, you can also break down those pesky towers! no more wasted time to shoot down the stupid crossbows in the towers.. what a relief. I also think the longer campaigns add to the game, instead of having really short campaigns witch i could beat in under an hour, new immense onces more than twice as big really take up time and give maximum enjoyment. I'd recomend this game to anyone, but when you play don't go hopping to get all your weapons at once.. or fight lu bu..

I was new to the DW series, so was uncertain exactly what to expect from this game. This is a superb title with immense replay value with 42 (!) characters to upgrade and play with after unlocking. Detractors of the series say very little changes or is improved on between the DW games, maybe this it true, but regardless this is an excellent game in itself, immensely satisfying when you slay a difficult enemy general or rack up a 1000 kills of enemy troops, or upgrade a character to discover cool new moves.
Difficult to fault really. The rock music seems an odd choice as a backdrop for medieval China and some of the voice acting is cheesy, to be expected really as few people seem to do it well... But all of these things matter not. I'll buy DW 5 if it comes it without a doubt.
