If you are looking for a cross between Kessen, Age of Empires & ....er chess (the original war game?) this is it done close to perfection.
Made by KOEI (Kessen, Dynasty Warriors, Disgae, Romance of 3 Kingdoms 8 etc) this game has no gameplay characteristics with Dynasty Warriors, the only thing shared is the story. This game is strategy based, there are no action parts.
The game is set in the classis Chinese historical 3 Kingdoms period, & you control 1 of the 3 big guys Liu Beiu, Sun Ce & Cao Cao (Kessen fans will recognise) as they strive to unite China under 1 banner. With such a good subject the "story" is captivating, but what about the gameplay?
Its hard to explain, there are 2 sections; the battlefield being the central part of the game, & the map part, where inbetween battles you prepare your troops, recruit new troops, send spies & diplomats out, declare war, etc. If you get this bit wrong you are gonna get mullered! HOWEVER you do have chance to learn thanks to a nicely balanced difficulty level that rarely gets easy or impossible.
In the battles turns are taken depending on morale, so (the max armies you can take on a battlefield is 10) all troops are numbered with the highest morale being 1 & the unhappiest troop taking last turn.
Set on a grid based battlefield in a variety of differing settings (castles, rivers, mountains, forests, etc) your troops each have some special moves, which on their own do extra damage, but combined have endless possibities. These tactical combos put me off trying the game sooner, as they sound wrong in a war game- combos sound more Street Fighter than Kessen. Dont let this put you off, they work fantastically well & the satisfaction when you unleash a 7+ combination is immense!
Dont be put off by the bargain basement price either (I was) this game is obviously a labour of love for its makers, its done well, is big & with endless replay value & 2 player!
Try it!
