The music on this disc is not for the faint hearted! The Solo 'Cello sonata is a tough, and uncompromising 32' listen but it is a work that grows in one's subconscious after a few listens. I was surprised to find just how many recordings there are of this work and that I'd not come across it before. Ms. Clein is an excellent guide to this sometimes thorny work and Hyperion have provided her with an excellent recording and presentation. (As one would expect!)
There is no doubt that there will be room for other recordings of these pieces but this will take some beating.

This is marvelous; the Kodaly sonata reminds me a little of a dark-hued Vaughn Williams with its clear folk music influence, and it is a really impressive piece that if you don't know you should try to hear. This is obviously a very personal project for Clein who has clearly thought about and felt every note, and to great effect. Another superb recording from Hyperion adding up to a string recommendation.

What a wondrous piece the solo sonata is. And good for Hyperion, not trying to sell the CD on Natalie Clein's pulchritude. NOt that I would have complained. I've loved this piece since hearing Grossman's recording but this is even finer.
