5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning portrait film 16 Mar 2013
By brainleek007 TOP 500 REVIEWER

I've only recently started using Portra 160 having been mostly doing my own B&W films processing but it has impressed immensely.

The whole thing with films is that they each have a unique 'look'. You choose the film depending on the results you want. Something like Velvia is famed for it's amazingly deep and vibrant colour saturation and is frankly amazing , in the right hands, for landscape work. Portra's look is about nailing skin tones first and foremost and it does this amazingly well. Colours overall are generally subdued but it's the skin tones that are just so good... There's something else, I'm finding it difficult to put down in words but I find Portra has a slightly ethereal quality but this is of course totally subjective but I really like that aspect of the film.

I've found it really easy to scan on an Epson V750 and when I nail the focusing on my old Mamiya RB 67 (see attached sample shot) it produces very sharp negatives.

It's a film I've instantly fallen in love with as it produces a kind of subtlety in the final image that's can be time consuming to reproduce in Photoshop with digital files.

And have you seen the price?? I've picked up 5 rolls of this in 120 format for less that twenty quid. Unbelievable!

Stock up and make sure they never stop producing this!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super film at a great price. 20 Aug 2013

Portra has fine grain, great colour if you process the scan correctly and can deliver superlative flesh tones. If you do film, especially at 120 you should give it a go. A 6x7 should deliver a grainless sharp metre long print- if your technique is up to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A portraiture photographer's dream! 22 Mar 2012
By Ciaran - Published on Amazon.com
This is hands down one of the best portrait films around. The new ISO160 edition is ideal, leaving little to no visible grain for enlargements! Now for those who started digital and are working their way backwards, you probably won't enjoy the muted colors and contrast...I find the popular trend right now is to over-process in terms of saturation and contrast. That said, I challenge you to take a look at a dozen high-fashion shoots and tell me whether the majority of them are over-saturated or muted...exactly.

- True-to-life skin tones
- Comparatively slightly desaturated, perfect for portraits
- Extremely fine grain structure
- Trusted by most pro film shooters
- Scans VERY well

Most experts agree, there is little to match this film for portraiture. Many medium format editorial/fashion shooters that have not gone digital still trust this as the only film to give that high fashion look! As a wedding photographer, the skin tones this film produces alone make this worth the minimal price premium. Throw it in a 645, and enjoy portraiture GOLD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic film 25 May 2014

I'm just getting into medium format photography, and this is amazing. I'm enjoying this film so much I'm considering selling my digital camera. Some day, perhaps, film will no longer be made, but until then, I'll be shooting this and Tri-X . The colors are wonderful and accurate, the grain is superfine, and it scans well.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars The film is fine, the expiration date is another thing 18 Oct 2013

The film appears to be fine (read professional articles on how the film nuisances) but be warned that the expiration date that I got was very close (a few months) so don't buy in bulk expecting to use it for many years to come. (This is more an amazon problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ol' Kodak! 17 Oct 2013

Another excellent product from Kodak!
For some applications, however, the extra speed of the 400 is needed.
Kodak is a major plus for the United States.
