Manufacturer's Description

Voted No.1 by Stuff Magazine

Winning Stuff Magazine's (Feb 2011) ‘Pocket Camcorder’ test against 12 rivals, the Kodak Playtouch is joining the award winning Kodak Playsport as the benchmark for video quality in this product category.

Its unique 7.6 cm (3") capacitive LCD touchscreen lets you glide through shooting, reviewing, and sharing HD video like never before. That's the beauty of the KODAK PLAYTOUCH Video Camera. It puts the high-end features you want right at your fingertips in a format that still fits in a pocket.

Choose the video quality that works for you:

  1. Full 1080p HD at 30 fps- best for viewing on an HDTV in full HD
  2. 720p HD at 60 fps-best for sports and action and great for super slow motion playback
  3. 720p HD at 30 fps- best for viewing on a computer, and sharing on the web
  4. WVGA (wide-VGA 848x480) at 30 fps-best for conserving space on memory card
  5. Or, shoot 5 MP still pictures.

You can apply up to 4X digital zoom, and using the Focus switch on the top, you can choose the focal range-Normal: 100 cm (39") to infinity; or Close-up/Macro: 15 cm (6"). Built-in digital image stabilization (DIS) records sharper videos with less blur, smart face tracking technology selects the best settings for properly exposed faces; and incredible low-light performance captures more details and accurate colours. Looking for variety and creativity? Apply one of the four capture effects: black and white, sepia, high saturation or 70's film ( "retro" look that mimics the colour balance of images popular in that decade-lower overall contrast, lower colour saturation, warm colour balance, pale bright yellows, desaturated skies and water, and earthy foliage).

Turn on the LCD Glare Shield feature in Setup and you'll have a choice of filters (normal, high contrast, or black and white) to help you better see your subject on the display screen in reflective outdoor situations. These filters are only applied to the display screen, not your footage- so everything you record will look as great as the moment you shot it.

Simple one-button operation

KODAK PLAYTOUCH is designed so you'll never miss the moment. Power on and you are immediately ready to record with its ultra simple one-button operation-just press the Record button on the back once to start recording and a second time to stop recording. The built-in mono microphone and speakers will automatically record and playback recorded sound, or you can attach optional external mono or stereo microphones, headphones or external speakers to the stereo port on the top. Recording with an external stereo mic will allow stereo playback through a stereo headset, external stereo speakers or any external stereo system.

There's a SD/SDHC card slot which accepts up to a 32GB SDHC card that's good for up to 10 hours of video (about 20 min per 1 GB at 720p HD, 30 fps-actual results may vary). If you run out of memory on the go you can simply change to a new card

Showing off those videos is just as easy whether you share them immediately on the 7.6 cm (3") LCD touchscreen or on a bigger screen. Pop out the built-in USB arm and connect KODAK PLAYTOUCH to your computer for hassle-free connectivity-no cables to remember; or connect KODAK PLAYTOUCH to your TV using the supplied HDMI (for 1080p videos) or AV cables.

Review mode includes single and multi-up viewing options so you can quickly search and find favorite files in your on-camera collection. The view on the touchscreen LCD is optimized for reviewing in landscape mode to give you the ultimate 1080p HD video sharing experience using the whole width of the HD format screen.

Video playback options include standard speed; fast-forward (tap the right side of the touchscreen once for 2X and twice for 4X), and fast-reverse (tap the left side once for 2X and twice for 4X) to help you quickly find your favorite sections; and single frame advance (pause, then tap the right side of the touchscreen to advance or left side to go back one frame) that allows you to select and extract single frames to save as still pictures-all controlled right in the palm of your hand.

You'll enjoy passing your videos around to show your friends and Safe Mode gives you peace of mind that your files are safe when you let others enjoy your PLAYTOUCH. This mode allows the user to take and review videos and pictures, but disables edit, share and delete functions. Safe Mode also locks many PLAYTOUCH settings so they can't be changed until Safe Mode is turned off.

The optional remote control provides flexibility in both shooting and playback. You can shoot from a distance and even join the action you're recording. Attach an optional tripod and/or external microphone for even more shooting versatility. When youÕre ready to playback video and pictures on your TV, you can use the remote control to run the show comfortably from your favorite chair across the room.

On-camera editing

With on-screen editing you can trim your videos-both front and back-choosing 'save' to replace or 'save as' to create a new file. On-screen editing also allows you to extract single frames from the video to grab that one amazing moment or a cool series of still photos.

The KODAK PLAYTOUCH comes with a powerful Li-Ion rechargeable battery that recharges conveniently in-camera by connecting the built-in USB arm to a computer, or by attaching the mini-USB cable and adapter to a wall outlet.

One-button upload to popular sharing sites YOUTUBE, FACEBOOK plus email

When you're ready to turn today's escapades into tomorrow's buzz, getting them online is as simple as touching the screen. Just press the Share icon on the touchscreen and your videos are automatically ready for the Web.

On the go you can shoot, review, and edit your videos immediately on the 7.6 cm (3") capacitive touchscreen LCD, and sharing online is quick and easy with no cables to worry about.

Using the touchscreen, select the videos/pictures you'd like to share, touch the Share icon to choose destinations-including email addresses, open the side door, swing out the built-in USB arm, attach KODAK PLAYTOUCH to a computer, and your files will automatically be uploaded to all selected destinations in one action.

The first time you connect a KODAK PLAYTOUCH to your computer, you'll be asked to download and install the KODAK Share Button App and set your social network and email preferences so you're ready to automatically import your videos and stills and then play, email, and one-button auto-upload to YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK. You'll also be prompted to install ARCSOFT MediaImpression for KODAK Software (PC only) that's installed on PLAYTOUCH and provides additional editing features beyond trimming and single frame extraction that's available directly on PLAYTOUCH. If you're a Mac user, no worries, you can use APPLE iLIFE software for editing.

With ARCSOFT MediaImpression for KODAK Software you can use the 'movie maker' feature to edit clips, add text screens for titles at the beginning and credits at the end of a movie, sequence a number of clips to tell your story, add a voice-over to narrate your footage, add pictures and music to make cool mash-ups, and use EasyPrint to print jpgs on your printer. You can also change resolution, or use the media converter to change file format, including AVI, and transcode your videos for viewing on other common devices like an iPOD or KODAK picture frame-even burn DVD's (including BLU-RAY-compatible format) for viewing on TV and archiving.

    It's ok 4 April 2011
By Sebastian Palmer TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
    Colour Name:Orange|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I bought this camera with a view to using it as an additional/second camera, predominantly for use in a studio, filming clips to be uploaded to Youtube and my own website. So, for almost exactly one of the reasons this device is purportedly all about. The idea being that with two simultaneous angles I could make better and slightly more professional looking movies, without breaking the bank.

Whilst these plans remain, as yet (work in progress!) largely unrealised, I have nonetheless used the Playtouch (I agree with another reviewer here that this a rather duff name, sounding more like a 'love-aid' than a camera!) a fair bit. And, again like other reviewers, I'm not that impressed. Build quality, and the quality of the interface, are about on a par, and feel cheap and clunky. Given the price, whilst it does do HD (although to my eyes the quality of this camera's HD isn't all that great), I feel that one would hope for better. Having said this, I'd previously used a camera borrowed from a friend, of the type I'd really like to own/use, and was shocked to find out it cost about £1000 (similar cameras now cost a lot less, but still much more than the Playtouch).

I realise now, especially having read other reviews, that my intended method of use for this camera was never really in line with Kodak's envisioned user: I always intended simply to capture the video on the Playtouch, and then do all my editing on a Mac in iMovie, integrating it with footage captured on other devices (e.g. iPhone & Canon IXUS 85 IS, both of which devices - tho' neither does HD - I much prefer in terms of user experience). This said, movies shot on the Playtouch are easily imported and integrated into my Mac's movie software, so this ticks that essential box for me with full marks.

I've not yet had the terminal problems some have had, but the ludicrously inadequate built-in memory was an immediate annoyance, as have been the very short battery life, and the very short charging cable: my other camera devices can film for much longer, and, if need be, be charged whilst filming. The Playtouch frequently conks out too soon, and then I have to unmount it to recharge it, or rig up various cables and extensions to get the charger close enough to allow me to continue filming. On the plus side, there's a camera mount, an essential feature for me.

The touch-screen doesn't function smoothly, and looks very cheap and chunky graphics wise, and is fiddly to operate, with the wrong functions coming up in response to my insufficiently precise handling. Other more comprehensive reviews here lead me to think I'll need to give the on-board OS an overhaul, deleting such unwanted features as the web-interfacing stuff and the graphics filters (very limited, and I'll do this in iMovie if I do it all), and poss a few other things.

But, all told, it does allow me to capture more footage, as desired, and at a fairly good level of image quality - certainly good enough for current purposes - so, whilst I'm not crazy about it, it's more or less doing what's required of it.

I bought this camera to record footage of my customers using my products and its been very easy to use - literally charge it up, insert the SD card, turn it on and record! For a while I had been using my mobile phone and other digital cameras for recording video, but decided that this camera was worth it for two big reasons: its quality (true HD at 1080 whereas my iPhone wasn't nor was my digital camera) and its size (its about the size of a mobile phone).

All the camera's functions are easily accessed through the touch screen and the navigation is straightforward. When filming people, the camera automatically identifies people and then automatically focuses on their faces and keeps them in focus. It also has simple modes for videos and still pictures which are easy to use, but frankly I have used them apart from experimentation when I first got it.

I have used a standard camera mount & tripods, which simply screws into the base of the camera.

Kodak also include editing software so you can easily edit the videos or stills

I took the camera skiing and unfortunately it broke when in my pocket, despite the fact that my iPhone or my still camera was fine.

    Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I can see what this is all about - so, there are huge numbers of videos being uploaded to social networking sites and YouTube - mostly from mobile phones. As phones have been developed to include more and more features, the ability to take video footage is quite common.

However, most phones haven't got full HD video quality and it can be quite fiddly to transfer that footage to your computer and then onto an internet site of your choice. What Kodak have done here, is create a compact device that actually looks more like a phone than anything else - but which gives you full 1080 HD quality video and allows very easy, one-touch access to upload your videos to the most popular internet sites.

This device is clearly aimed at a young market, who want ultimate ease of use, for a specific purpose - mainly documenting their day-to-day social lives online. If you accept that point it all makes sense - if you are looking for something different, then it clearly falls between several stools and is neither one thing or the other!

You might ask why, if you are recording HD video, then why not have a much better lens to improve the picture - why not have better zoom facilities? The point is that such things would increase the size and make this bigger and bulkier.

As it stands, you can slip this camera into a jacket pocket and not even notice it's there - you can carry it around and when that "You've been Framed" moment comes up - you can just point and click, to capture it in stunning quality - well that's the theory anyway!

The other question though, is if you require the ultimate convenience and portability - then why take more than one device with you? Surely you would just settle for a phone with the best video capability and make do with that - you aren't going to have two or more devices?

From my own point of view, I am amazed that such a small and compact device can record such high quality video - given reasonable lighting. OK the zoom is a bit frustrating and jerky but I do like this camera and I have tried recording 1080 HD video - playing it back through my big HD TV and seeing great results.

As a musician, I can see all sorts of applications for this - filming my band's gigs or short promos, filming workshops and lessons with teachers to help remember the learning points and filming my own playing to assess technique and maybe pass on lessons to others.

I can also see it being useful in things like video reviews of products and with the Summer approaching, I intend to use it for recording outdoor events like festivals, marathons and other live events.

I was impressed with the whole package - all the leads and interfaces you might need are included - which is not always the case. Of course you need a decent sized memory card and I would recommend something like the : Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card which has the space you need. I liked the large touch screen - which is easy to read and provides a decent size of display.

As to how this rates - clearly there are limitations and quibbles which would maybe justify a 3-star rating. But I give this 4 stars for the whole package and ease of use. It fulfils a need, rather than being a device that is created to be better, by virtue of features that may not be needed. It identifies a market and gives potential users what they need.
