With 12 Megapixels, back side illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor delivering stunning low-light pictures, fast 30X wide-angle SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON Zoom Lens with optical Image Stabilisation, 3” (7.6 cm) HGVA bright LCD with 2X more resolution than standard displays, best-in-class click-to-capture speed*, fast auto focus, and 1080p HD video; the MAX camera has all the high spec features you’d expect for the ultimate picture-taking experience. But it’s the extra bits you get on a KODAK Camera that make it really stand out from the crowd.

World's only cameras with 3-step sharing

Everyone enjoys sharing their latest pictures and videos with friends and family online but its often so complicated they end up just staying on the camera! The new KODAK Share Button makes sharing your photos and videos super easy.

  1. Simply press the KODAK Share button in review mode.
  2. Select your favorite sharing destinations -- FACEBOOK, YouTube, FLICKR, TWITTER, KODAK Gallery accounts; e-mail addresses you’ve added to your camera; and you can even share photos straight to an optionally purchased KODAK PULSE Digital Frame that’s capable of receiving pictures via email.
  3. Connect your camera to your computer with the USB cable provided and your pictures and videos will automatically be transferred to your computer and simultaneously uploaded to all tagged destinations.

It’s that easy! And only KODAK Cameras let you simultaneously share to multiple social networks and e-mail addresses, automatically share when you connect to a PC, and tag to the largest number of social networks.

The first time you connect the MAX Camera to your computer, KODAK’s Share Button app (a small software program) will automatically launch and prompt you to add login information for your online sharing sites and email address. After that one-time setup, pictures will automatically be uploaded to the sharing destinations you’ve chosen just as soon as you connect your camera to your computer.

Unprecedented Performance

Best-in-class click-to-capture speed and fast auto focus* Capture that challenging action shot with fast, click-to-capture speed and auto focus. With an incredible click to capture speed of <0.1 secs, the MAX is the perfect companion for any fast moving action. The camera also features a High-speed burst mode: allowing you to capture up to 60 fps @ 2 MP (max 20).

Don't be afraid of the dark KODAK EASYSHARE MAX is the first KODAK Camera that uses a new back side illuminated (BSI) CMOS technology sensor delivering stunning low-light picture quality with less noise and less blur — no flash needed.

With previous technology the entire sensor infrastructure sat in front of the sensor, meaning light had to pass through all of this to reach the photodiode reducing the sensor’s sensitivity.

BSI CMOS sensor delivers stunning low-light pictures

In a BSI CMOS sensor, the arrangement is basically turned upside down so that the infrastructure is behind the light sensitive part, so the light travels directly through the lens to the photosensitive layer. This gives the photodiode a "Front Row Seat" so light sensitivity is significantly boosted.

Extreme 30x Zoom The Easyshare Max features a 30x zoom with a focal length from 28-840mm (35mm equivalent), enabling you to capture dramatic shots. Superior SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON optics further help to zoom in faster and closer than ever to deliver crisp, steady shots for extraordinary creative performance.

Camera shake can certainly become more of a problem with longer focal lengths, but the Easyshare Max is packed with tech to produce shake-free results. Optical Image stabilisation automatically minimises camera shake to deliver crisp pictures, while Intelligent image processing — reduces any noise, to deliver crisp details and true-to-life colours.

Program auto mode (P) - Camera sets optimal shutter speed and aperture combination.

Aperture priority mode (A) - You choose aperture, the camera sets shutter speed.

Shutter priority mode (S) - You choose shutter speed, the camera sets aperture.

Manual mode (M) - You choose both the aperture and shutter speed.

All PASM modes also provide access to a full list of manual controls—including RAW file format -- that allow you to express your full photographic creativity.

A RAW file is not compressed and offers greater dynamic range and contains more colour information (available in PASM, Sport, Portrait and SCN modes). You can use the RAW File Develop feature in the edit menu to develop, edit (picture size, quality, exposure compensation, colour mode, sharpness, and white balance), and save RAW files as Fine, Standard, or Basic JPEG files. You can also edit RAW files in KODAK EASYSHARE Software.

Multiple Scene modes (SCN)

Access a suite of features that automatically select the best camera settings for pictures in unique environments. A description of each Scene mode appears when you move the cursor over a SCN icon. Available SCN modes include: landscape, flower, sunset, backlight, candle light, children, bright, fireworks, self-portrait, night portrait, light landscape, stage, high ISO, and panorama R-L and L-R. Sport and portrait modes are accessible directly on the mode dial.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

Useful in high-contrast scenes. The camera takes and merges 3 pictures to produce one of high dynamic range, accommodating light levels from bright sunlight to faint starlight.

To capture a broader portion of the dynamic range of the scene one image is over exposed plus 2 Stops - brighter than normal to get good shadow detail, and another image is under exposed minus 2 stops - darker than normal--to get the highlight detail. The result, a new image with increased dynamic range.

New HDR feature is perfect for higher contrast photos such as sunsets

Effortless operation

Weighing just 593g when fully loaded with batteries, the EasyShare Max is ergonomically designed for comfortable handling. A large, 3” (7.6 cm) HGVA bright LCD with twice the resolution at 460K dots, makes it easy to preview, review and share your shots even when you are using the camera in bright sunlight.

This Max is compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards. Available in increasingly large capacities these provide an inexpensive way to extend the cameras capacity.

Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)

The high resolution electronic viewfinder making it even easier to compose your shots. Just press the EVF/LCD button and use the electronic viewfinder to conserve battery power and improve visibility outdoors

Better pictures automatically with Kodak Smart Capture

The MAX camera allows you to choose how much photographic control you’d to have on a picture by picture basis. When you’d like to save time and concentrate on composing the picture to capture that perfect moment without worrying about adjusting camera settings select Smart Capture on the mode dial and MAX will do the rest to insure you get the best result.

Unfortunately, selecting the auto mode on some cameras means you may be disappointed with the result. We’ve all taken pictures of scenes that looked great through the human eye but not so good on the camera. A typical example would be a picture of a subject with a bright background. In these backlit situations the background looks good, but the subject—the most important part of the picture-- is often too dark. KODAK's Smart Capture feature allows you to become a better photographer in just about any environment by automatically applying three split-second processes to improve your pictures without you having to adjust any settings:

Kodak’s innovative Smart Capture automatically identifies the scene and adjusts camera settings for a great picture

Click here for a larger image

  1. Intelligent scene detection detects and analyzes the characteristics of scene
  2. Intelligent capture control then automatically sets camera settings including exposure, focus and ISO for clear, sharp pictures even in low light and challenging situations
  3. Intelligent image processing enhances the final result in the processing stage by reducing noise and clearing up dark shadows for vibrant, crisp details and true-to-life colours.

So with Smart Capture you’ll get better pictures automatically in just about any lighting condition without the worry of adjusting camera settings. You just press the button and we do the rest.

Face Detection

The MAX camera uses Face Detection when you take a photo to ensure faces are in sharp focus and correctly exposed —so you get better pictures.

Face Recognition

If you’ve ever scrolled through hundreds of pictures on your camera looking for those of one special person, Kodak’s Face Recognition feature is just what you need. It’s powerful and easy to use. (You can also search by Date and Keywords.)

Using the on-camera keyboard, enter the name of any face detected during picture taking—up to 5 different people in a single picture. The next time a picture of a tagged person is taken; the camera will automatically recognize their face and assign the right name to it. A maximum of 20 different people can be added to the on-camera face registry, and up to five different poses of each person are used to increase the accuracy of their facial recognition. Once a person is recognized by facial recognition, its super quick and easy to search by name to find all the pictures of that person. You can also tag pictures on your camera with keywords like “summer holiday” for easy search and retrieval, or search by the date that’s automatically tagged to your picture when it’s captured.

Record Full HD 1080p video with stereo sound

Select video mode through the dedicated video button and start recording in Full HD 1080p --composing your footage either on the large, high resolution LCD or the though-the-lens (TTL) high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) and using optical zoom if you wish. You can edit video on-camera too -- trim clips to focus on the best bits, make a still picture from your video, or even create a 9-up Action Print. Want to share your video online – then simply use the Share Button and select your destinations.

Surprisingly good 18 Jun 2011
I was dubious about buying the Z990 because Kodak doesn't have a very impressive history when it comes to digital cameras, and because virtually every review I've seen has criticized the sensitivity of the buttons. Remarks like: 'One of the biggest issues with the Z990 is the buttons and switches being so unresponsive. If you want to shoot in a hurry, forget it. Choose a different camera' are not uncommon. In addition, I was wondering what I'd get for the very modest price Kodak is asking. I have owned DSLRs and other bridge cameras. The latter usually are a difficult compromise between size, cost and quality - with the lack of the quality usually winning out.

But I am very pleasantly surprised with Z990. It is very nicely compact, feels solid and sits well in my (big) hands. The quality of the pictures it produces is superb - and at almost any focal length: even at the very long 840mm, where the image stabilising is very successful too. Noise is very well supressed, even quite high up the ISO range.

Those buttons: frankly I have no idea what those reviews are talking about. They respond in the same way as any other camera, with no delays. The menu system is reasonably uncomplicated, with most of the commands readily to hand. The 3" screen is viewable even in sunlight, and the EVF is useful.

I am impressed with the battery life, which looks likely to live up to Kodak's 500 picture estimate. As they are standard Ni-MH batteries, they recharge in about a couple of hours.

I have owned the Z990 for only a few weeks, so maybe issues will arise with heavier use, but, so far, I'm very happy with it. The only - minor - downsides I've come across so far is the lack of an option to use filters or an external flash, although it comes supplied with a lens hood.

Before buying, I needed to find an answer to a couple of queries from Kodak. What followed was not a happy experience. For the first call I was put through to Africa where the person didn't understand my question, and put the phone down on me. The second took me to Scandinavia (isn't it fun travelling around the world?) where the support person was very pleasant but said this model hadn't been released in her neck of the woods, so couldn't help me. Bear in mind, I had rung a UK number. I hope I don't have a problem with the camera; I'm not looking forward to going through that again. Because of that, I've knocked off a star. The camera itself is worth five.

But for the money you get a lot - both in terms of features and quality.

Try before you buy 23 Jun 2011
I bought this camera because I wanted a good quality SLR type camera for when a compact just isn't good enough. I have owned it for 3 weeks and after using it on holiday I'm disappointed for the following reasons.

1. The preview seems to last for ever so you miss shots or have a lot of frustrated people waiting around for you to take the next picture.

2. The supplied software attempts to download all your pictures as soon as you connect to your PC. You can't drag and drop or copy and paste. I have received a long fix from Kodak but it doesn't work. Using a card reader has the same result - you have to close the application in the 10 seconds you are allowed before you get them all again.

3. The colour rendition is poor in some circumstances. Bright red flowers come out yellow and red sunsets come out pink.

4. You can't attach filters or lens hood as far as I can tell.

5. The supplied Kodak batteries are almost useless as the go flat after fewer than 100 pictures. The supplied charger takes over 12 hours to achieve this.

On the positive side, the zoom is very powerful and the many different modes seem to work OK.

On balance there is little gain over my 5 year old 8 MP Olympus 800 and a lot of extra weight to carry about including spare batteries.
