Powerful 8X zoom in a stylish compact body
Sharing pictures has never been easier than with the KODAK EASYSHARE M580 Digital Camera. The M580 Digital Camera puts the power of photography in the palm of your hand with 14 MP and an 8 X SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON wide-angle (28 mm) zoom lens in a stylish compact body less than 2cm thick. The 8x wide angle zoom lens delivers amazing flexibility allowing you to both shoot distant objects, filling the frame with just the part of the scene you want, and to capture wide angle views useful when taking pictures of groups indoors in tight spaces and capturing the drama of a spectacular horizontal landscape or vertical subject like a skyscraper or waterfall. In addition to the professional quality optics in the SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON lens, the M580 features optical image stabilization which reduces blur caused by subject movement or fast-action situations and automatically minimizes the effects of camera shake to deliver clearer, sharper pictures. And for those really dramatic vistas, select Panorama mode and the camera automatically stitches together up to 3 pictures for a seamless stunning panoramic photo. The M580 Digital Camera also has a large 3” (7.6 cm) bright LCD so you can enjoy reviewing your pictures right on the camera and HD video recording at 720p@ 30 fps so you can capture high quality movie clips too. Power comes from a Li-Ion rechargeable battery with higher voltage and energy capacity for excellent performance, and in-camera re-charging using the included cable and AC adapter is quick and convenient. All these features in a compact body that that’s less than 2 cm thick that’s all very impressive, but it’s still the ease of sharing pictures that sets this camera apart.

One button upload. View larger.
One-button upload to online sites such as FACEBOOK and FLICKR and email.
You’re out snapping pictures with friends and want to share them online as soon as you get home. That’s a snap with KODAK’s one-button upload. In review mode just press the Share button to select your sharing destinations - YouTube, FACEBOOK, FLICKR, and KODAK Gallery sites; e-mail, and KODAK PULSE Digital Frame, too. When you connect your camera to your computer with the USB cable provided; your pictures and videos will automatically be transferred to your computer and uploaded to all tagged destinations. It’s that easy. The first time you connect the M580 Digital Camera to your computer, Kodak’s Share Button app (a small software program) will launch and prompt you to add login information for your online sharing sites. After that one time setup, uploads to your tagged sharing destinations is executed automatically when you connect your camera.

Face recognition. View larger.
Face Recognition makes finding pictures easy
If you’ve ever scrolled through hundreds of pictures on your camera looking for just one picture in particular, Kodak’s face recognition feature is just what you need. It’s powerful and easy to use. Using the on-camera keyboard, enter the name of any face detected during picture taking—up to 5 different people in a single picture. The next time a picture of a tagged person is taken; the camera will automatically recognize their face and assign the right name to it. A maximum of 20 different people can be added to the on-camera face registry, and up to five different poses of each person are used to increase the accuracy of their facial recognition. Once a person is recognized by facial recognition, its super quick and easy to search by name to find all the pictures of that person whenever you want.

    Colour Name:Silver|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Kodak Easyshare M580 is a very great value super-zoom camera.

The most important thing to note is that when taking pictures the M580 does an great job in many situations; slot in an SD card charge it up and take pictures are you are rewarded with good colour and little noise on your photos when images taken in good light. The Zoom lens has a very usable wide angle when fully retracted which lets you get more of the family or the landscape in the photo and remains fairly useable out to its full 8x range; though its clearly distorted out at its maximum zoom. The large 14 megapixel resolution lets you crop the photos down which may be useful - if you do try and avoid the distortion at the far end of the zoom. Kodak touts the M580 having optical image stabilisation on the lens which reduces shake - and is fairly essential on such a long zoom. As OIS goes I found it to be fairly ineffective; and shots taken at the 8x showed some

The M580 has a large rear screen; and no optical viewfinder; I found the screen excellent in relatively dark conditions and very difficult to see in bright daylight - though to be fair when testing it i had the same issue with the also viewfinder deficient Sony NEX3KS Alpha Compact System Camera - 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Lens - Silver. The screen sometimes showed some terrible colour casting; especially on indoor lighting or through windows but the photos taken when this happened never exhibited this.

There are some excellent scene features to help you take photos of flowers, landscapes or take portraits for example and was one especially surprising - 3 shot panoramic photo auto-stitch facility. This guides you through taking 3 images and it stitches them into a single panoramic photo - whilst not automatic like on the Sony cameras its an excellent feature to find on such a good value camera. The video capture is capable of 720p video in a mac and youtube friendly H264 format; the onboard microphones do a reasonable job of capturing sound.

The easy share feature lets you upload photos to flickr (say) by tagging them in camera. This works through the Kodak software; interestingly this is on the camera itself rather than supplied as a CD which is a great feature.

With so much positive I can't understand why the case despite its appearances is cased in cheap feeling plastic. The in camera menus - are exceedingly simple to use but they lack the visual polish that moderns cameras tend to have and don't make the best use of the screen on the back. As with all small cameras its quite slow at taking pictures; it feels very slow when turning it on though when on it happily takes a photo every second.

    Colour Name:Silver|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Apologies for starting this review on a negative but you would think that someone who can produce a 14MP camera would have thought of a better way of affixing the wrist strap than trying to thread it manually through a tiny hole - it really was frustrating or just maybe my lack of dexterity and patience was exposed .
Anyway the camera itself is compact and easy to use which is just as well where I am concerned. Anyone wanting in-depth technical detail & jargon better bail out of this review right now cos it ain't going to happen but I will attempt to give some useful information .
Having fiddled with that accursed wrist strap it's a relatively simple thing to assemble the charger , plug in and within an hour the camera is fully charged and you are ready to commence snapping if I may use photographic lingo. Actually taking photo's is a doddle with the "smart capture technology " which "
automatically sets camera settings including exposure, focus and ISO for clear, sharp pictures even in low light and challenging situations; and Intelligent image processing--reduces noise and clears up dark shadows for vibrant, crisp details and true-to-life colors.".What this effectively means is it frames the scene in an green perimeter on the viewfinder to give the taker a firm idea of what will be in the final picture and that it takes great pictures which indeed it does very well. The final pictures are truly stunning and without any fiddling or fussing with settings. Which may or may not put some people off depending how seriously autonomous they wish to be when taking photo`s.
There is 64MB of internal memory built, which is a tad miserly , but there's ample support for SD and SDHC memory cards. It also records HD videos at 720p resolution which is not too bad and has a 28mm wide angle lens unit from Schneider-Kreuznach optics which is presumably impressive .
It is easy to loads the camera's software onto your computer- you do not even have to load a disc just connect using a USB. The one load button for social networking sites is something I am about as likely to use as a wombat diviner so I cannot comment on how useful this is or how well it works When first connected to our computer the software gives you the option to add loads of logging info for all the networking sites- faceache & flicker etc .I passed on this option but I am clearly in the minority when it comes to this sort of thing so the more socially adept should find this option valuable
Basically the M580 is setting out to be a straightforward snapper and there is nothing wrong with that. It feels a little cheap & plasticky and it's on screen interface is rather clumsy but what it undoubtedly sets out to do it does very well. Serious photographers will find this too lightweight , disposable and simplistic but for the rest of us it's an option well worth considering.Just be prepared to wrestle with the strap .

My Girlfriend has bought me this camera for my birthday and I must say, I am delighted with it. It is easy to use and the pictures are of very good quality. With the 8X zoom it is so easy to get professional snaps, and the crop function makes it easy to enhance your pics further. The Autoflash works well although on occasions the pics are better with the flash off, particulary with fun pics in the pub where there is a lot of background light. The battery life is adequate and lasts for a good 100 pictures or so and a 4GB memory card is enough to store over 600 pics in maximum resolution. The camera is lightweight and the tft screen is a good size. The design is modern yet simple but you might have to pay more if you want a certain colour which is why mine is silver because that is the cheapest. At that price there is no better camera around.

    OK Camera
Camera is ok, not very good at moving shots, but for still pictures nothing to write home about. In hindsight would have preferred the canon range of products.
