2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading publicity 31 May 2009
By Polly
I bought my Kodak ESP-5 to replace my old HP printer. The publicity stated lower ink costs and as I am newly retired I thought this would be an asset. The ink cartridges do indeed only cost half the price of the HP inkjet cartridges BUT they need replacing far more often and the colours aren't that accurate. It certainly is easy to use but the end results are very disappointing. I am currently saving my pennies to buy a replacement (most probably another HP) what a shame !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware 30 Jun 2008
By Davie
This printer uses the same print engine as the disgraceful Kodak 5300 and 5500. I work in a large store where we sell a lot of the biggest name brands. The 5300 was brought out a year ago and within my store it has acheived 25% returns just within the first year. Lexmark used to hold the crown as worst manufacturer reliability but Kodak has taken that crown easily.

One of the problems extends from the photo printing process where a clear film is applied over the ink on the paper. When the ink runs out this film is still applied, then if this paper is re-used after the ink is re-filled the ink will not stick and a mess ensues. If you do buy a kodak and you run out of ink, do not attempt to re-use any paper twice.

The problem above accounts for a large percentage of the returns, but the rest are a mixture of faults in a much higher ratio than any other manufacturer.

Kodak should be applauded for their approach on ink prices, but it a shame they are made poorly. Nice looking printer as well.

EDIT: well in my store we power up and take sample pictures of the new products. Last night was the ESP5's turn. Started fine, printed test photo's good, went to scan and it swallowed 20 sheets and the A4 drive mechanism is knackered. The first ESP5 opened is faulty - GREAT start, but it looks like the same problems from the 5300 are going to exist.

EDIT 2: During this years TV campaign there has been an upsurge in demand, and so has the returns! Looking at sales verses returns in my store alone, we are 33% returns in JUST 5 MONTHS - incredible failure rate. Kodak know all about these problems but refuse to acknowledge it. DO NOT FALL FOR THE HYPE.

EDIT 3: The news just gets worse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing! 22 Jun 2009
It looks nice but is very noisy.
The ink may be cheap but runs out very fast.
The paper jams easily & is very hard to get out.
I have only had this printer 3 weeks and already need a new print head.
I would not buy this printer again.

1.0 out of 5 stars The most Useless Printer !! 4 July 2009
I purchased one of these without first checking with possible Amazon customer reviews. Big mistake !! Like many reporting here, I have had nothing but continuing troubles and frustration with this awful product. Constant paper jamming, being virtually impossible to free without interior damage; constant renewing of the albeit inexpensive ink cartridges (the machine uses large quantities of ink simply turning it on and setting itself in readiness). Notwithstanding frequent attempts with the self-cleaning regimes and cartridge renewals, the print quality is appalling and has deteriorated to not printing anything. In view of the many awful reports of Kodak Support, I cannot be bothered to waste more time with them - it will only serve to increase my stress and blood pressure needlessly.
In summary, DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON PURCHASING A KODAK PRINTER !!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware part 3 22 July 2009
I purchased this printer back in March and it really is the worst piece of kit I have ever experienced in my life. At first it seemed just great, noisy, but great, but the cheap feel of it worried me a little. I had been told instore that it did great printing so I was not worried

In April the printer started making white lines, so I did the clean printhead task a couple times which sort of cleared it up but then came back again. Took the ink out to see if I could clean it, but then the printer refused to recognise the ink. Put a new cartridge in then it still had the problem. Phoned Kodak and got through to the call centre which was not in Britain but the person on the other end talked me through okay and agreed it was the print head problem.

They sent this through to me and I installed it only for the printer to tell me I was out of ink! That was the new ink I had only days before installed. Another ink was put in and that cleared the problem. Great, it was printing as good as new and all was well with the world .... for a month then the exact same thing happened again. No way was I going to phone Kodak again so I took it back to Currys where I bought it. After explaining the problem and blagging that I had phoned Kodak they replaced it for me without much hassle with another ESP 5. Got home put it on power and I'll be blowed it made screeching sounds and ate about 10 sheets of paper and jammed up on first test sheets! Whilst trying to get these out the rear roller came off and I could find no way of putting it back as it seemed to have come away on one side.

Back to Currys, where I explained the problem again. The person behind the desk was extremely helpful, and did try and look to see if a repair could be carried out, but it was broken.
