I have to admit to being quite disappointed by this book, I found it just didn't really have enough on anything so it was just frustrating rather than helpful. I have got so many lonely planet guide books that I was just expecting it to be a mini version of one but it isn't really. In particular there is only half a page on accommodation for the whole of the island which really isn't giving much to go on.

Despite the fact that Koh Samui has developed into a popular holiday destination with plenty of four and five star hotels this guide disappoints. It is a little out of date, swings a bit toward the back-packing community and suffers from the gushing pen of China Williams, the author, who is apt to romanticise the island, which doesn't do the place justice, because its a great beautiful place, with some ugly bits and a bit 'rock'n'roll' in places - I loved the island but didn't get much of an insight from this book. The other alternative book is a Kindle guide that has just trawled the net for information and that's just about your lot for travel guides on this island. On a positive note there are some useful bits of information and the book costs just £4.69 so you do get value for money on this average read.

This "Close Encounter" series are a good companion. I bought this one and the Bangkok Close Encounter. The information and maps are indeed useful. Besides, the size is compact, so it may fit in one of your pockets. There is no problem in carrying it with you at all times during your trip. Good value for money.

You cant go wrong with the lonely planet books, we found a great help when visiting Ko Samui. A good read on the plane.

Koh Samui
There is very little choice in the market place on Koh Samui but this gave a good insight to what the island has to offer.
