Product Description

Fans that were lukewarm to Ani DiFranco 's bare-bones, self-produced Educated Guess will be pleased to learn that the notoriously independent artist has delegated half of her 13th studio recording's production duties to fellow singer/songwriter Joe Henry. Knuckle Down combines all of the spite, spark, compassion and wordy observation of the DiFranco of old with the kind of constructive hindsight that can only come from years spent blazing your own trail -- the knotty title cut ends with DiFranco musing "I think I'm done gunnin to get closer to some imagined bliss/I gotta knuckle down/just be ok with this" then wistfully replies "'course that star struck girl is already someone I miss." It's a brave opening statement, and one that permeates Knuckle Down throughout. Henry, along with guest musicians Todd Sickafoose, Julie Wolf and fellow Righteous Babe recording artist Andrew Bird never intrude on DiFranco's signature percussive guitar work and Joni Mitchell motor-mouth, rather they paint lovingly the complex world around them, reigning in the artist's penchant for long-winded intros and meandering mid-sections with a subtlety that does wonders for standout tracks like "Sunday Morning" and "Studying Stones" -- the latter features some of Bird's divine whistling. Knuckle Down may not have the machine-gun edge and maverick intensity that fueled her early-'90s heydays, but it spares nobody -- including DiFranco herself -- from interrogation, and with its creative arrangements, smart pacing and refined production, it ranks as the artist's most concise and accessible release to date.

Firstly, I just want to say that I highly recommend this album!
I walked into a small CD shop- you know the ones that aren't chains. Had a little look around and thought I'd see if they had any Ani CDs. To my amazement they had her new album a week before it's UK release, don't know why but naturally I bought it to hear it before everyone else.
I have been listening to the 'taster' songs on her website and they say it all really- pure genius. It really is start to finish an excellent album and to think its her 15 studio album (if you count 'like i said')- it just amazes me how she can keep churning out such good music.
A lot of people were disappointed with her previous album 'educated guess' but i assure you this one is in a league of it's own. There isn't a weak track, each song is beautiful. It is easily one of the strongest contenders for her greatest album.
Out of her previous albums that I own (I don't own them all) I would say if you like the slower, beautiful songs on 'out of range' then this CD will amaze you because it has a really beautiful feel about it that's similar (although not the same- no Ani CD is the same).
So overall, you don't have to be an already diehard fan to appreciate this music. I would say that it's an album you can buy to start your collection of Ani Difranco and then afterwards dipp into her early stuff.
If you're already a diehard fan then you are almost guarenteed to enjoy this.
She is remarkable, so unbelievably talented that sometimes it's hard to see what the point of other female songwriters is when you've got Ani Difranco.
Check out the songs on her website

Finally an album to compare to the fantastic 90's albums. Picked a copy up in early January in a tine indie record store and can't stop playing it. Personally love Sunday Morning and the title track Knuckle Down. Her gig in March is going to be brilliant.

When i first got this album, i will be honest to say that i struggled with it, but once you give ani difranco some time you realise she is a beautiful song writer with a unique voice and a great talent. She is prolific artist and i have recently bought plastic castles but i find "knuckle down" a much stronger album. I would recommend ani but be prepared to work at it.
