Denis Rixon's "Knoydart" covers the history of the Scottish peninsula from Prehistoric times to the present day. In neatly chronological chapters he discusses subjects as diverse as the Viking sttlers to the well-documented Highland clearances of the 1800s. The eleven chapter headings also include "Prehistoric and Early Christian", "The Jacobites in Knoydart" and "The Population Problem and Emigration." The book is not only invaluable for someone interested in the history of Knoydart, or a particular settlement on Knoydart but also for those with an interest in the "Rough-bounds" which extend down to Moidart and also north to Glen Elg as these are frequently mentioned. Within the 187 pages Denis Rixon does not serve us history on a plate but gives us the contemporary sources to look at ourselves. Even though this is a classic textbook approach, at no point does the reader loose himself or herself in a tangled web of information, as it is presented logically and in layman's terms. Maps and diagrams abound in the book, as do contemporary sources such as census returns and literary evidence from a variety of people. Each chapter considers Knoydart as a whole but increasingly depicts the individual settlements as the years progress. The lives of ordinary people are discussed, as are the various disputes that took place in the lives of the clan chiefs/rulers of the community. Overall, I found this to be an informative and well-written guide to the history of an area that has had a relatively small amount of other material published about it.

Good introduction to the area but too much on the geology and not enough on the settlement of the area. I wanted more on the social history of the area. The book could have been better set out.
