Book Description

3 Nov 2011
Chantelle 'Channy' Allen is just about enduring her slightly bored teenage existence - trying not to die of embarrassment every time her parents' Abba tribute band perform a cringing medley of hits in front of all her friends...

But then Channy finds out something that turns her world upside down; something that makes perfect sense, but at the same time seems utterly ridiculous. Something that Channy is intent on investigating - despite the distraction of gorgeous French exchange student Antoine.

Channy's about to learn a valuable life lesson: sometimes curiosity is a dangerous thing...

Product Description

Review

A humorous, light-hearted story with funny, real and SHALLOW characters (Taking the Plunge). A must read!

(Hannah, 12, Chicklish website )

Electra is a really likeable character with a great outlook on life. She feels very believable, and even though she worries about the big things in life, the shallow things still get to her.

(Write Away, website )

One for all teenage girls to read (Out of My Depth). I highly recommend it!

(Kirsty Scard, Waterstones )

We love her!

(Mizz on Electra Brown )

Witty and engaging.

(Chicklish 20111101)

Entertaining, with a lot to laugh about.

(Books For Keeps 20120101)

A good story told with wit and humour. Popular dialogue and lively narrative are combined with a light touch that carries the story along. (Carousel 20121101)

2.0 out of 5 stars Completely unrealistic 8 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
Fell for the blurb - like always! It appeared at the beginning that this was going to be a really good read and I was really disappointed. Channy is a little eccentric, which I can relate to, but also very very self absorbed and selfish. The plot is very jumpy and some of it down right unbelievable. The way the author dealt with some of the issues in the book was appaling - I know if I'd been Channy I would definately have not acted the way she did! Her reaction was not right at all. The Antoine plot is too under developed and should not be how it is at the end of the book. I could go on about how fake this book is, but I could be all day! I feel really bad for being so harsh on the book but there's no other way to honestly review it! If you like fake books and unrealistic shallow story lines this is for you! :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Chic lit with depth 4 Feb 2012
By Katie
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Channy is a bridesmaid at her auntie's lesbian wedding & although she's longed for this for years she hates her dress & everything else. This starts out with a very chic lit, rapid talk about makeup, fashion & female angst atmosphere. There seems to be no real substance and I was extremely tempted to put it down and not bother reading on. However, the blurp promised a hidden secret so I read on and I'm glad I did. Channy finds out about her adoption but isn't sure whether it's both or one parent. She goes in search and through careless use of facebook she puts herself in extreme danger. It's a very light hearted look at serious issues and well worth the attention of any YA reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars funny, lively and warm-hearted 18 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Chantelle 'Channy' Allen has always felt like the black sheep of her family. While her parents are busy singing away in a popular Abba tribute band, she would much rather sit and read a good book. But when a chance remark at a wedding leads to a growing suspicion, how far might her curiosity lead her...?

This is another witty and engaging novel from the author of the Electra Brown series (Life at the Shallow End, etc) and Running in Heels. The Abba references in the narrative are brilliant, as are other cultural references - the books Channy reads, her love of Sylvanian Families - it all added to the rich, humorous voice of the novel. This book is truly funny as well as being touching and occasionally harrowing. I loved all the characters in this story: the smooth French exchange student, the heart-on-sleeve rough-and-ready Crab Stix, Channy's down-to-earth friends, her wonderfully eccentric parents, and the witty, self-conscious Channy herself.

Highly recommended!
