Book Description

6 Oct 2008 Know Your...
Jack has researched 41 of the breeds of cattle which you would be most likely to see grazing Britain's farms. They are presented here in a handy reference guide. For each animal, he gives a description of their appearance, a brief history and considers their uses today. In this title, each text is accompanied by a full page colour picture of the animals in their natural environments. Only the size of a postcard, the book fits into small hands or the rucksack or pocket of the interested rambler. It is the perfect gift for adults and children alike. "Know Your Cattle" is the third book in the popular "Know Your" series. In this series, "Know Your Sheep" and "Know Your Tractors" are also available.

4.0 out of 5 stars know your cattle 22 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I found this book very informative and up to date. The pictures often obtained from breed websites were mostly clear and accurate. The text also was presumably sourced from these websites and seemed to echo the individual breed societies` claims as to the history of their breed.
The rarity status indicators from the Rare Breed Survival Trust was also useful and dated from last year so were as current as could reasonably be expected. My only serious complaints would be the claim that the belted galloway only differed from the standard galloway by its belt whereas it also differs in being milkier. The other was the omission of such native breeds as the northern dairy shorthorn and the white galloway both regarded by many experts as distinct breeds. Otherwise a very handy and useful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good steer 27 Dec 2010
By Nigel
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this for a Maasai friend who came to work in the UK and who wanted a vocabulary to talk about the cows he was seeing to his cattle-keeping family back home. He's overjoyed, and his copy is being passed around already. I would have said this clear and concise guide was ideal for young people and amateurs who want to know more about British bovines, but you don't get much more expert than an East Africa pastoralist, so it clearly has wide appeal.

Good book for people wanting to learn different cattle breeds. Photographs of most cattle breeds, includes a description of the breeds and also their conservation status. Would also be good for children as it's a simple book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but small 8 July 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my dad, a retired cattle farmer, who now has Alzheimer's disease. I thought it would be good for him to look through - jog a few memories, etc. It is a simple, straight forward book. However the two negatives are - it is misrepresented in the pictures - It is actually the side of a standard post card (so quite small) and there are a lot of recent modern european imported cattle breeds - unfamiliar to all apart from modern farmers. Otherwise a simple, well laid out, good value booklet.
