Amazon.co.uk Review

Just what the world needs, another riff on that post-Psycho horror cliché: the slasher movie. In this version, which considerably dumbs down the Lois Duncan book, the bad guy chases naughty teenagers with a hook, all the while dressed as a dark version of the Gorton's fisherman. They seem to have killed someone in a car accident while out partying, and a price must be paid. Nothing new is added to the genre by I Know What You Did Last Summer, though it would be unfair not to note that this does have some scary moments. That is about all it has, because as much as this wanted to be another Scream, it hasn't the heart or the script. It does, however, have the requisite cast of small-screen stars (including Party of Five's Jennifer Love Hewitt and Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar) to have snagged box-office success, spawning a sequel. --Rochelle O'Gorman

I Know what you did last summer is a really clever slasher film. You might think it's going to be cheesy but its not, it actually quite original and nothing like Scream apart from the fact that people die. The villan who is a fisherman, i thought was not going to be very scary or as creepy as other horror villains, but was suprisingly haunting. The acting wasn't the best but you couldn't really expect much more from the cast of actors. But I do give them credit as they did in some scenes seem genuinely terrified and they do make you want them to stay alive, which is all you really need them to do. The pnly thing rong with the film which doesn't really matter is the fact that it doesn't matter if the victim is sprinting away from the villain and the villain is just strolling he always seems just two steps behind. Overall great film and some jump scenes.

I Know... 23 Jun 2009
By Dismal Angel TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Penned by the same author of "Scream", "I Know What You Did Last Summer" reeks of plot twists, good old fashioned slasher-ific deaths, and a memorable cast.

Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), her boyfriend Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr), her best friend Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and boyfriend Barry (Ryan Phillipe), find themselves all being caught up in the accidental hit and run of a man on the fourth of July

Reluctantly, Julie agrees to go along with her friends plan of ditching the body off the end of the pier and hoping it'll be dragged out to sea never to be seen again.

A year passes, and Julie is attending college; having lived with the guilt of murder for a year, she's no longer the smily bright-eyed bubbly girl she used to be, surprising her mother to a dark, palid and withdrawn version of herself when she goes home for Summer Vacation.

As Julie tries to settle in at home, she suddenly finds herself being thrown in to the terror of last fourth of July all over again when a mysterious envelope comes through the mail, the contents claim "I know what you did last summer".

Now, she must draw Ray, Helen and Barry together again so they all can unravel the mystery and find out who's behind this devious note. But as strange things begin to occur, Julie realises what she thought was a warning, may be a definite death threat when a dark figure in a slicker and a fisherman's hat begins to stalk the group.

Mindless fun 29 July 2008
By Amanda TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

If you're expecting originality you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a faithful adaptation of the superb book this is based on you'll be let down. If you just want to sit down to enjoy a entertaining movie, that is well-acted (the supporting cast (Bridgette Wilson in particular) do as good a job as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe & Freddie Prince Jr.) you've come to the right page.

Four friends run over a man & dump his dead (?) body into the ocean after their drunken 4th July celebrations. One year later almost to the day, one of the friends receives a letter & the game is on. As it draws to 4th July the letters escalate to hair cutting, disappearing bodies & hit and runs.

I must mention that the main `stalk n slash' scene is gripping, edge-of-your-seat stuff. I wouldn't really call I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER a slasher though; it's more of a suspense thriller. The film focuses revenge.

The film relies on tension & building suspense instead of blood and gore, like classics such as HALLOWEEN. I'm not saying that I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is on that level, but it is well done. The film is better then it's chief comparison SCREAM because it seems more realistic.

One observation; I'm quite sure that the film had an 18 certificate in cinemas, while the DVD is certified as a 15. This makes me wonder over missing footage. I don't want to give anything away, but the killer has collected newspaper articles that detail something that seemingly has very little to do with the given plot. Just little things like that are winding me up. It doesn't spoil the plot or anything like that, so it isn't really important I guess.

Also, Anne Hecht has a seemingly pointless supporting role. So where has any left out footage gone? It's not included as an extra. Are they going to bring out 50 DVD editions of this or something?
