4.0 out of 5 stars I Know That Name - And so should many more 8 Nov 2008
Format:Audio CD
'I Know That Name' finds Paul Carrack finally getting back to writing and recording (largely) his own material. The previous 3 albums being 2007's 'Old, New, Borrowed and Blue' compilation, 'Greatest Hits - the Story So Far' (2006 Greatest Hits) and 2005's 'Winter Wonderland' (Christmas songs). The last album of new Carrack songs was 2003's 'It Ain't Over', so it's well overdue and I'm pleased to say it's been well worth the wait... For me, this is his best album since 'Satisfy My Soul' (2000).

I mentioned that this is 'largely' his own material; the only exception being the opening track 'Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City' the Bobby Bland song (also covered by Whitesnake) and Paul's most successful UK single in a long, long time. There are 3 tracks co-written with his old Squeeze pal, Chris Difford - 'Stay Awake', 'Love Is Thicker Than Water' (a fine duet with Sam Moore of Sam & Dave) and 'Am I In That Dream?'

The album has a real warmth to it and yet sounds bigger than recent releases. This could be due to the fact that he's moved out of his home recording studio and recorded partly in Nashville. But he still plays pretty much all the instruments (except the brass) on the majority of the songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Know That Name. 4 Jan 2009
By Flickering Ember TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Obviously, I'd heard of Mike & The Mechanics, and also Paul Carrack, but this album is my first real introduction to his music.

I own and love the Eagles' album Long Road Out Of Eden, and when I found out that a song from it; I Don't Want To Hear Any More was originally written by Carrack, I decided to give him some further investigation.

This album reminds me a lot of one of my other favourite artists, Elvis Costello. There are also some elements of Burt Bacharach and Allen Toussaint in certain parts.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the album, especially the track which got my attention in the first place; I Don't Want To Hear Anymore. There was not a bad or weak track, or any I'd skip over, but similarly, there were none which really stood out to me either.

I guess Carrack is at a stage where he is past caring about chart rankings and massive sales volumes, although both would be nice, and just concentrating on making the music he loves, which shines through on this album. I look forward to exploring his back catalogue as he's really impressed me with this offering.

4.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece missed - just! 30 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
Just four stars when this new album contains some of the best songs Paul has ever written or recorded? If that seems a bit harsh it's because the whole album somehow doesn't work as a collection. "I Don't Want To Hear Any More" is a fine song but it sounds just like what it is - a tune penned for the Eagles. "Am I In That Dream?" is a sweet ballad but there's nothing else on the album like it. The two reggae tracks (which come as a bit of a shock!) are actually well done but they jar when put alongside the real meat of the album.

And what is the real meat? Eight beautifully produced tracks which hang together perfectly and show Paul at his absolute best. There he is on the CD cover looking edgy in monochrome. Listen to "If I Didn't Love You" or "I Don't Want Your Love" and the photo matches the mood perfectly. "It Ain't Easy" (the best song he's ever recorded?) finds Paul moving confidently into Sly Stone territory. "No Doubt About It" and "Love Is Thicker Than Water" are upbeat soul anthems. These five and three other tracks, "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", "Stay Awake" and "Who Am I?", all share the same full but slightly tense production values and most nod more than respectfully towards the songs of the sixties and early seventies Carrack grew up with. A whole album of such material would indeed have been a masterpiece.

As it is, my quibbles above notwithstanding, it's a must-have for any fan of his work. "Life just keeps getting better..." he sings on this album. So does Paul Carrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mike (lover of good music) 2 Aug 2009
By Mike S
Format:Audio CD
Paul Carrack is one of those artists that every time you hear him you think 'oh what a great song' and 'oh what a great voice'. This is my first album of his and it certainly does not disappoint. Carrack fans will no doubt rate this a little higher than I. But if you like his stuff you will like this - how it compares with previous albums I cannot say other than this is a very enjoyable and listenable album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music 5 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is a superb collection of music that I'd recommend for listening, soul-searching, foot tapping at times, and smooth romance.
I had heard one track on the radio - I need your love - which was irresistable. Since hearing the rest of the collection it has been inevitable that I have become a serious Paul Carrack fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars I know that name
Nothing shockingly unfamiliar here for Paul carrack followers. Some reggae influences and better arrangements. I would rate this as one of his strongest albums.
