The only travel book on Stockholm you'll need 18 Dec. 2004
By Jessica Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Travel books are verbose compared to these mapguides, and once you have used one you won't go back to the larger, laminated things with huge foldout maps. This is organized into 6 sections with small, bright, readable maps that fold out and are very discreet. I have lived in stockholm for three summers, and every time my Swedish friends suggest somewhere to eat (a native 'secret') I look in the book, and there it is! I.e., the book has reliable suggestions for places to visit and eat. The only place I think they left out was Herman's, a great and inexpensive vegetarian buffet in Södermalm. OTherwise they have all the major places and eateries you'll want to visit. Although these books seem targeted to the student/young adult (someone with limited pocket money and a desire to get to know the city herself), there are also entries for more expensive hotels and restaurants for people who want to spend money. I think that amassing a collection of these MapGuides would be a good idea for someone 'backpacking through europe,' as they are easy to carry. These books are small enough to fit in your pocket but large enough to be able to read the text and navigate easily. They are lightweight, unlike most tourist books, and in full color. Oh-- don't miss the 'walk around Skeppsholmen,' described in the B (purple) section. After buying this book, I have also used the Berlin, New York, and Vienna ones, and I think they are all fantastic.

You can get a Stockholm map for free, so why should you buy this book? 21 July 2011
By Mike in Glen Head, NY - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This small book contains 6 fold-out maps for the following areas:
A - Gamla Stan
B - Nybroplan / Blasieholmen / Skeppsholmen
C - City / Norrmalm / Kungsholmen
D - Ostermalm
E - Djurgarden
F - Sodermalm

1. Compact - fits in purse or jacket pocket. Easy to unfold and refold each map.

2. Excellent map detail - shows all streets, Metro stops, important buildings and points of interest. Also has a separate Metro map.

3. Contains an alphabetical index of street names and places to visit with references to the map letter and map coordinates.

4. Has other useful information - not a substitute for a guidebook, but the back of each map provides short descriptions of major attractions, restaurants, etc. This is useful when you're in an area and you want to know what else you should see while you're there.

1. Metro stops are shown on the street maps, but they are not connected. There is a separate Metro map at the back of the book, but it is difficult to relate it back to the street maps. It would be helpful if the Metro routes were superimposed on the street maps, (although this may be a difficult thing to do while keeping the maps readable).

2. The maps do not show bus, tram and ferry routes. For this, you need get a Stockholm transportation map from the Tourist Information Center across from the Central Station (where you can also purchase a Stockholm Card which gives you unlimited Metro, bus and tram rides, a free boat cruise and free admission to almost every museum and attraction).

Almost perfect pocket guide to Stockholm 18 Oct. 2006
By since1968 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
While on a four day stopover in Stockholm we carried this guide at all times and were never disappointed. The maps, opening & closing times, and prices were always accurate, and the suggestions were sound. It's light and thin so you can slip it in a pocket instead of carrying it in your hand.

Just be aware of what it is and isn't: it's a small book of fold-out maps with brief descriptions of hotels, sites, and restaurants. It does not have any of the lengthy paragraphs on history or culture that you would expect to find in a larger (bookish) guide.

I'd certainly buy a Knopf Mapguide for any city I visit.

Excellent Guide! 3 Dec. 2009
By R. Leach - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I purchased this map guide back in August for a trip I took to Stockholm in October. The guide was very useful. And I think is much better than the one from another company that I purchased for my trip to Copenhagen. The book breaks down Stockholm into sections so you are not looking at one big map. There is plenty of useful information about each section you look to tour. I will definitely look to purchase from them again for other trips I plan on taking in the future if the books are available.

Fantastic Travel Resource 14 Dec. 2007
By JSim - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I'm not sure that I would describe it as the only travel guide you'll need to get around Stockholm seamlessly, but it comes pretty close. The design is brilliant, simple, and user-friendly. The book is lightweight, compact, and pretty resilient. While it does demarcate tourist destinations, restaurants, within each neighborhood...it is only a small glimpse of what is available. That said, if you know what you want to see, you can coordinate with your list or other book, and then just bring this handy mapguide along.

I'll definitely be purchasing the Knopf Mapguide for other trips.
