Book Description

Oct 2003 Knopf Mapguides
This opening fold-out contains a general map of Istanbul to help you visualize the 6 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.

Discover Istanbul through 6 districts and 6 maps

Saray Burnu/ Sultanahmet
Kumkapi/ Beyazit/ Eminönü/ Süleymaniye
Fatih/ Fener/ Balat/ Eyüp/ Hasköy
Karaköy/ Galta/ Beyoðlu/ Taksim
Niºantaºi/ Beºiktaº/ Dolmabahce/ Ortaköy
Üsküdar/ Kizil Adalar

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Istanbul has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Istanbul
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.

A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great map, very easy and unobtrusive to carry. 1 Dec 2011
By Joe M - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
We used this Knopf mapguide (along with ones for Naples, Rome, and Athens) during a recent European cruise. We found them to be easy to use, unobtrusive, and easily carried.

We used it extensively during our visit to Istanbul. Streets and places of interest are clearly marked. The book is divided into pop-out sectional maps for each major neighborhood. The construction and paper appear to be quite durable.

My only gripe is where a neighborhood crosses to a different sectional map, it's sometimes hard to get oriented. If the book was just 1/2 inch narrower, I'd give it 5 stars. The guide is just barely small enough to fit into a rear pants pocket, or into a jacket, but it's a tight fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fits in Your Purse, Good Neighborhood Maps 12 July 2013
By NYC Lap Swimmer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
These guides may not be the one you read before you go on vacation, but they are the ones you take with you because they fit in a purse or small backpack. Maps have enough detail to get you to the restaurant or museum you are looking for, and they are divided by sections of the city. You get a feel for what that neighborhood is like by the dozen or so descriptions below the map of places you find there. We buy them for every city we visit; they are also a nice way to remember where you have been. You can mark those streets and places with a highlighter.
4.0 out of 5 stars I like these convenient, concise map guides.... 22 May 2013

Good for what they cover. Most importqnt, it fitsw easily in a daypack so that you will actually use it. Recommendations are fairly standard for sites, more interesting for restaurants. No map or guide of Istanbul that I have seen gives adequate information on how to use the ferry system.
4.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate but useful 21 Feb 2013
By Nicola Cufaro Petroni - Published on Amazon.com

Maps are small and hence often inaccurate; however they giwe a reasonably good overall idea of the separate
neighborhoods described. Follows a good list of what to see on every map ... but then you need a larger guide

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible map 5 Jun 2006
By Will - Published on Amazon.com
How can Knopf publish a map that does not show the tramline from Eminonu to Findiki along the Bosporus. This is like a map o New York City that doesn't show the A/C line to Brooklyn. Wait until you get there and buy a Falk Stadtplan (city map).
