Elegant light 6 Oct. 2012

This is a great tail light. I've owned many Knog lights over the years and never had any problems with the light. I've had straps break, but never experienced a light failure.

I bought this light because I wanted to make the transition to a USB rechargeable rear light. I use Cygolite Expilion 400 Usb Rechargeable Headlight with Quick Release Li-Ion Battery Stick and Wall Charger as a helmet light and their wall charger works perfectly for charging the Knog - a great combination.

The mounting mechanism differs from the familiar wrap-around and hook style of most other Knog lights. This one uses a unique mounting clip that seems to be their attempt at making a more durable mounting strap. You have to remove the light from your bike to recharge it, so this will get a lot of work. It seems delicate, but it certainly holds the light securely.

This light is super bright, but you knew that, right? They don't call it the "Blinder" for nothing!

The small switch on the side of the light is easy to locate, even though it is pretty much invisible when reaching for it at night. A small raised bump helps you find it, even in absolute darkness.

The USB charging spade folds out from the inside back of the light. Impossible to recharge while on the bike. Unclip the light and stick it in a recharger.

April 2013 Update:

The strap is holding out well. I take the light off after most every ride to recharge it and so I've developed more confidence in the strap.

During one of the first snowstorms of the season, I was on a night ride on a bike trail. As I neared the end of the 40-mile ride, a police car came flying up to the trail with lights on. Two officers jumped out and ordered me to stop. They had a report of a suspicious person on the trail. Suspicious because I was riding in a snowstorm, at night! Mainers tend to stick inside during blizzards, I guess. The first thing they told me was they had been chasing me for a long ways and were very impressed by how bright my tail light was. They claimed they could see it for two miles through the snowstorm. It made them think I was closer to them than I was and every time they pulled up to the trail, they saw my taillight farther down the trail. I think the tail light helped them determine that I really wasn't suspicious. We all laughed and they let me ride on.

Strap Breaking after 2 Weeks 29 Aug. 2013

I'm seriously mad and dissapointed that such an expensive safety product fails after less than 2 weeks of NORMAL use!! The manufacturer should use better quality, industrial strength rubber for the strap. This is not a hair tie!! I paid for quality and so I would not have to deal with this gargbage. I am so infuriated. DO NOT BUY.

The strap is weak 30 April 2013

The light itself works well and is visible from a wide angle. The rubber mounting strap is weak and started tearing on mine after a couple of uses. This is not a sturdy attaching mechanism.

Band broke in two months 30 Jun. 2013

While the light worked well and the battery had decent life, the band broke quickly, making the unit worthless.
Unacceptable considering the price.
Look cool, incredibly utilitarian, but always fail 31 Jan. 2015

I have had Knog lights for years. Every one has failed. This one isn't completely done yet, but it's definitely an item that has some problems. I have had it for 9 months now, and the first time I packed it up in a backpack (i.e. transported it in a manner not affixed to the bicycle) the button on it broke, sliding somewhere under its silicone cover. Sometimes when you push where the button is supposed to be, it's there and it activates the light. Other times, there is no pushable button, and the light cannot be turned on or off. I have been living with this annoying malfunction for about six months, and I will be returning this light and asking for an exchange, as I am still within the one year warranty period.

You may wonder why I keep buying Knog lights if every single one has failed on me. Well, they are so incredibly utilitarian when they ARE working that the generally low cost outweighs their lack of longevity. The silicone bands make the lights easy to install and remove, and they don't slide around while you're riding, so you don't have to continually adjust them during riding. Also, if you order a color that matches your bike, or is translucent, they are rather nondescript and not-noticeable, which I think reduces their theft allure if accidentally left on the bike (and I have left them on my bikes hundreds of times).

What other failures have occurred? Well, Knog claims they are waterproof lights, but water damage isn't covered in their warranty.... so I have lost 4 lights to eventual water damage. Two of my little Knog Frogs, after months of trusty use, wouldn't turn on, then wouldn't turn off, and eventually were just in a perpetual state of low-level LED discharge, until their batteries faded. Another Frog wouldn't turn on at all. Yeah, the electronics suck pretty bad, which is no surprise for a product coming out of a Commonwealth country.
