5.0 out of 5 stars Top class kung fu, 13 Nov 2007
By
This review is from: Knockabout [DVD] (DVD)
This is up there with the best kung fus ever made, made during the golden age age 77-85 by the legendary Sammo Hungs team,This sees the great Yuen Biao in his first starring role. The film sees Yuen and his brother the excellent Leung kar-yan as a couple of con men,the opening 1/2 hour or so sees them going about there buisness and provides some good comedy moments, then they get out foxed by the tricky {shaw brothers legend} lau kar-wing,who they eventully persade to train up there modest kung fu skills, many plot twists follow as the kung fu on show cranks up to the highest order with Sammo Hung gettin more involved from the sidelines.Excellent production, decent sprinkling of comedy,a good plot for a kung fu,and as you would expect from a cast of Yuen,Sammo, leung kar and lau kar-wing the kung fu is of the highest order and plenty of it,with the customary epic final duel.Right up with the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trickshot reviews kung fu films!, 6 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Knockabout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Knockabout is one of Sammo Hung's first directing roles at Golden Harvest and you can see why he went on to make more movies for them. The plot focuses on 2 brothers (Yuen Biao) and (Leung Kar Yan) who scrape through life by tricking money off of the unsuspecting public in various ways. That is untill they try to trick kung fu master (Liu Chia Yung) who gives them both a beating. The 2 then plead with the master to take them as students which he does. After learning from their new master for a while they discover he's not the nice man they thought he was. (Leung) finds out a bit too much and is then killed. With not enough skill to beat his master (Yuen) runs away and subsequntly bumps into (Sammo). So now with a new teacher (Yuen) learns some more kung fu in the hope of one day avenging his brother... High class choreography, great cast and interesting plot make this film a definite classic. Not the best Sammo production out there but one of them for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb kung-fu movie!, 30 Jan 2010
This review is from: Knockabout [DVD] (DVD)
I've wanted to see Knockabout for quite some time but being out of print in the UK the price is astronomically high. Luckily I managed to find a more reasonably priced copy several months ago. Being such an old film I really didn't expect that much from it even with the amazing Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung involved. Boy was I surprised how good Knockabout turned out to be! Yuen Biao especially turned out one of his, if not his best martial-arts performances I've ever seen. Such skilful and acrobatic martial-arts performed without wirework was just breathtaking. I'm always amazed Yuen Biao never turned out to be a martial-arts superstar like Jackie Chan. His moves, flips, acrobatic prowess draw droppingly awe inspiring. By far the most skilful performer of the three brothers. The film starts a little slow having some nice little comic touches building towards an epic finale. Some great training and fight sequences masterfully choreographed throughout. It's such a shame that Hong Kong cinema can't make them like this any more. I highly recommend that you purchased this DVD. Maybe not this UK version but if you can play other region DVDs the US region 1 DVD can be had quite cheaply. A must have in any martial-arts fans collection!
