Product Description

About the Artist

Chris Wood is a remarkable composer and musician (violin, guitar and voice). Immersed in English church music and later in the traditional music of England, Quebec and France, he has worked with musicians from both the folk and classical world, as a player, composer, arranger and teacher. Chris has also performed in the highly acclaimed Wood, Wilson and Carthy collective and The English Acoustic Collective.

Chris started his career playing with an embryonic form of the Oyster Band, from where he went on to play for the RSC and the National Theatre before forming the influential partnership with Andy Cutting with whom he toured all over the world. A contemporary hero of the English folk tradition--radical, fierce, compassionate, humane, political, proud, tender, humorous, critical and frank--Wood's work speaks directly to anyone concerned with English life and society. His impact is immediate and direct.

Chris Woods has been my most recent dicovery, and his music is so incredible. I am astounded by his lyrics of such fierce intensity, and his guitar playing is strong, resonant, and sparse. To my mind Chris Woods is only among a handful of English Folk Singers/Songwriters who can summon up darkness and intensity in his songs and guitar playing. I would say myself that the music of Chris Woods is highly political, and very contemporaraily relevant - his music and songs do shine a light on recent machinations by the rich and powerful in our society. I was introduced to his music throught his earlier album "Tresspasser," and was so deeply struck, and a deep chord within myself was ignited. If you like deeply thoughtful, deeply insightful, and deeply emotional music well then Chris Woods is the man for you. All his songs speak directly about our British society, and how power can be abused, and how ordinairy people do suffer, and bear the brunt of these awful machinations. Chris Woods for me scores 20 out of 10 - breathtaking, sureal, truthful, insightful, and comptemporary to today. Buy this album, in fact buy them all - you will not dissapointed. This album is dark, dangerous, and truly magnificent. Chris Woods shares centre stage with Andy Cutting on this album, the playing is crisp, sparse, and rhythmically strong. Buy it!

Marvelous, magical mode of music ! Moving, mysterious, medieval and mystical; mmmm! Having ploughed through the rock fields, folk rock, Blowzabella and mucho worldy music, I've been beamed up into a rare and misty place where magic lurks. Andy Cutting's wonderful accordion music is like a mountain stream, clear and pure, frolicking along with a deep power, bubbling, meandering, swirling around the subtle fiddling and occasional fine song from Chris wood. So nice to hear a different version of the charming 'Spencer the Rover' - to the one I'm familiar with, by John Martyn. All the music has a great texture and strong yet subtle beat, the tunes flow into and out of each other, medieval trance, enchanting and uplifting. Stirring and sterling stuff oh yes! Sometimes light and jolly, other times deep and haunting, always excellent. World music from Olde England - cheers me hearties!
