Review

If you love knitting lace or have never done it and want to, this is the book for you. It has excellent photos of lace pattens together with written and charted instructions. It also has good techniques, finishing and the projects are very good. Projects are mainly for women with a couple of baby and child projects. I liked them all. I also like the way that Lynne shows a variation of the pattern with another yarn. A lovely book and the lace patterns are most useful for my own designs. --Karenplatt.co.uk

I am a novice lace knitter whose first attempt at knitting lace ended up in a complete disaster and I never dared to try again. Now that there are so many lovely lace patterns and yarns around, I decided to have another attempt at learning how to knit lace. I chose this book to guide me and I am very pleased with it.

The book is visually pleasing, very clearly laid out and uncluttered, with detailed instructions suitable for complete beginners. The book is organised around lessons based on sample squares, many of which are very pretty despite being relatively simple. I like the fact that there are lots of photographs and illustrations showing you the techniques. Each pattern is shown both in written and chart formats. In addition to the sample patterns, there are some complete projects too: some inevitable baby items and home accessories, a jumper, and a few scarves and shawls. They are nice enough, some of them I could definitely see myself making, but I'd say the main value of the book is in the very good pattern library. Once you master the technique you can easily use these patterns to make pretty scarfs, cushions etc. of your own design.

The only complaint I have is that the book does not offer any trouble-shooting advice or tips on how to avoid errors (hence only four stars). For example, it does not include the "life-line" technique which lace knitters often mention. But all in all, it's a great book, just right for someone like me who is trying to learn lace knitting in small steps, before launching into a full blown shawl project.

I brought this book as I am fairly new to knitting (on and off over a year) but I really wanted to learn to make some lacey shawls/scarfs. This says it is a course which will teach you basic lace-knitting techniques. Not really.

The book begins promising enough. The first few "lessons" are about the different kind of yarns/needles you can buy, and it even discusses various methods for casting-on/casting-off, as well as how to knit and purl. So in that respect you could purchase this as your first knitting book as it definately goes over the very basics of knitting.

But, here's the downside. The knitting course aspect of this book ends there. The rest of the book is patterns to make samples of lace (such as shown on the front cover), as well as some projects to put some of those patterns to use. Most of the patterns however don't get used, so I think they will only be useful to an experiencing knitter who is able to make and adapt their own patterns.

If you don't have children to knit for then be disappointed. Most of the patterns are for children and babies. However, as it happens a friend of mine is soon to have a baby so I decided to try the very first project in the book (so the easiest) which is a baby blanket. It is a beautiful pattern however there is one major flaw - the book doesn't teach you some of the more difficult stitches. To make the baby blanket you need to knit 'bobbles'. The pattern simply says "make one bobble". I looked to the front of the section - no explanation on how to do that there. Looked at the beginning of the book where it teaches you how to knit and purl - couldn't find it there. I eventually found how to make a bobble in the list of abbreviations at the back of the book where there was a brief description. For a knitting course that seems to assume you don't even know how to knit it was very bizarre that it didn't tell you how to do something a pattern asks for.

But still, I will be keeping it as the samples are pretty and as I get better at knitting I am sure I will be able to incorporate them into scarfs, hats etc. Some of the projects look promising and most of them are cheap to make. It is worth buying however do not buying it thinking it is "step by step" and "easy to follow" as you will have to use other knitting books/guides to help you use this one. The baby blanket and women's shawl are nice and are definately ones I will be trying.
