I am a novice lace knitter whose first attempt at knitting lace ended up in a complete disaster and I never dared to try again. Now that there are so many lovely lace patterns and yarns around, I decided to have another attempt at learning how to knit lace. I chose this book to guide me and I am very pleased with it.
The book is visually pleasing, very clearly laid out and uncluttered, with detailed instructions suitable for complete beginners. The book is organised around lessons based on sample squares, many of which are very pretty despite being relatively simple. I like the fact that there are lots of photographs and illustrations showing you the techniques. Each pattern is shown both in written and chart formats. In addition to the sample patterns, there are some complete projects too: some inevitable baby items and home accessories, a jumper, and a few scarves and shawls. They are nice enough, some of them I could definitely see myself making, but I'd say the main value of the book is in the very good pattern library. Once you master the technique you can easily use these patterns to make pretty scarfs, cushions etc. of your own design.
The only complaint I have is that the book does not offer any trouble-shooting advice or tips on how to avoid errors (hence only four stars). For example, it does not include the "life-line" technique which lace knitters often mention. But all in all, it's a great book, just right for someone like me who is trying to learn lace knitting in small steps, before launching into a full blown shawl project.
