Product Description

Product Description

Scarves are often the first garments beginning knitters try. Then, when they feel ready for a greater creative thrill, they move on to other types of garments. In "Knitting New Scarves", Lynne Barr beckons all levels of knitters back to their humble beginnings and then wows them with 27 spectacularly modern designs, each one created using an innovative new technique or a unique take on a traditional one. This novel approach, which dares knitters to rethink what is possible by simply manipulating knits and purls, leads to a collection of flattering, functional, and fun-to-make accessories. Imagine a scarf that looks like a strand of black pearls or unfolds like an accordion, one that playfully draws inspiration from the famed Chanel jacket, or a twisting futuristic high-rise. Every scarf is shown in its finished form in beautiful still-lifes by photographer Tyllie Barbosa, and, when unusual techniques are called for, up-close step-by-step photos are provided as well. This means every scarf in this masterful collection is both captivating and accessible for all levels of knitters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 24 Oct 2007
This is possibly the best scarf book ever, although Pam Allen's 'Scarf Style' may still be in the lead. There are so many knitting books which claim to be original and provide a new look at the subject, but this one really is.

At first sight, the scarves all appear to be fairly complex, but there are some starters' scarves too. A common rule of thumb is that if a book provides two or three patterns that you would actually consider knitting, it is worth buying, but I want to knit much more than that and even where I don't want to knit the entire scarf, I certainly want to try out the technique. It really is original and inspiring.

The finishing touch is that the pattern instructions are clearly laid out and easy to follow, and the accompanying photographs really show you what you need to see. This book shows all the marks of being produced by people who understand what they are trying to do, and not just a series of dissociated book designers and photographers. The author took the instructional photos herself, and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars New techniques for even the most experienced knitter, 6 Nov 2007
By B. Hetherington (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There have been a lot of lovely knitting books that have come out in recent months but none that has made me as excited as this one. I wasn't sure whether to get it or not as I am not that keen on scarf knitting to be honest but I thought I'd give it a go. I really wasn't prepared for what was hiding beneath the rather unexciting covers. This book is full of new ways of looking at knitting and the patterns rely on exciting ways to construct shapes, often based on architectural inspiration.

As soon as I started looking at the patterns I just wanted to get out my needles to try the techniques which involve short rows to form curves which I am familiar with, but also using double pointed needles to pick up and move stitches and wander off into experiments of design and construction.

I think this is possibly one of the most exciting knitting books I have ever seen and I can't recommend it highly enough for those who want to move out of the box and experiment with new ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Purchase Ever!, 21 Oct 2007
I don't think I've ever been so excited by a book as I am with this one. This is such a creative and ingenious book, but I don't think the cover picture indicates just how new these new scarves are! As a budding designer, I'm inspired by this wonderful book.
