This excellent book would be a valued addition to any knitter's bookshelves.

It has well-explained patterns for 25 different toys including cushions and finger puppets. Clear charts make multicoloured items far simpler to make than would otherwise be the case. All the patterns could be made in different colourways to those shown, according to taste.

For less experienced knitters, there are clear explanations of yarn types and tension: I wouldn't really call anything in this book an absolute "beginner's knit" though.

The two reasons I have held back from giving the full 5 stars is that the printing is a little hard to read for my middle-aged eyes, and that the book doesn't stay open by itself. Otherwise I love it, and will use it a lot. And the photographs of children with the toys are a delight!

This is a reprint and contains all of the same patterns which appear in the previous edition. There's nothing new to add so it's not worth updating if you already have the original version. This version is quite a lot smaller (18.5x20cm) than the original and so the print is small. The charts are the same size (I think) as the originals and there's a single page at the back of the book to explain how to use them (which is new).

That being said, the toys are gorgeous. I've made the monkey for my son, and the cat pyjama case for my daughter. Instructions are sparse when there are charts, and if you need help with knitting basics then you'll need to look elsewhere. However, my toys look like the ones in the pictures and I'm very happy with the variety of things in the book. The toys get 5 stars, but if I was looking for simple, beginner patterns I'd be disappointed. There is lots of intarsia.

I'm definately going to be making more and I would recommend this book to people who are fairly confident knitters, or who are happy to use other sources for basics.

Delightful book 11 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is absolutley delightful to look at. I say look at because I have not yet tried any of the patterns, but I do look forward to doing so. The only drawback from my point of view is the addition of felt for ears and wings etc.
It would have been nice to have a choice of knitting or sewing felt. However, this does not really detract from the beauty of the book and means that I shall have to learn how to sew as well as knit!!
