Book Description

Oct 1993
This guide provides creative knitters with a collection of three-dimensional figures from history. From the ancient world, meet an Egyptian man and lady, a rabbi and a high priest. An Italian Renaissance lady emerges elegantly from the 15th century, Queen Elizabeth I rules in the 16th century, and there are the Pilgrim Fathers of the 17th century and the ostentatious Madame de Pompadour from the 18th century. All these characters and others are represented in over 50 full-colour photographs, together with historical facts and knitting know-how, drawings, knitting patterns, and details of yarns and stitches. There are instructions for making a basic body, embroidering features on a face and for knitting clothing, accessories, jewellery and even underclothes. The book should be of interest to knitters, embroiderers, doll collectors, doll-makers, historical costume enthusiasts and fashion students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ageless and fascinating. 18 Feb 2001
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book which takes knitted dolls one step further into the realm of miniature models. Although at a cursory glance, the patterns appear complicated, on closer inspection, they are refreshingly straightforward. Anyone capable of knitting stocking stitch and following a simple chart should have no difficulty in completing the projects. These little figures will appeal to a wide age group. They are an interesting task for older folk with time on their hands, and they would also be a challenge to young knitters who want to make something a bit different from the normal knitted rag doll. A pair of these figures from a particular period would be a dramatic addition to a historical school project. Jan Messent has also written a book called "Knitted Gardens". This is as good as Historical Figures, and knitted articles from the two books could be used in conjunction to produce some really stunning tableaux.

5.0 out of 5 stars KNITTED HISTORICAL FIGURES 11 Jan 2011
Format:Hardcover
What a great book! The instructions are very clear and no detail has been omitted. This is quite an engrossing book and makes you want to get stuck in and make them all. The illustrations are wonderful and as a bonus you have a wealth of historical facts. What a great and novel way to teach children about history where they can atually see and feel the kind of clothes worn by the characters depicted. A great buy and highly recommended for compulsive knitters like myself. All are characters with a difference and are complete with instructions for their underwear and even their jewellery and hairstyles. I absolutely love it and am very glad I bought it.
