Product Description

Product Description

Nineteen patterns ranging from simply chic to astonishingly intricate are arranged into three sections. In Columns, Cookie looks at the relationship between adjacent columns within vertical patterns and how they interact with one another. The section on Tassellations combines a variety of shapes into geometric outlines with surprisingly organic results. And the last section, Diagonals, will take you off the standard rectangular grid into curves, intersections and travelling components that swirl around the foot. These categorizations introduce a new vocabulary for classifying and understanding patterns. Among the projects are Pointelle, a pattern which features diagonal lace lines over an arrowhead lace background, and Wedge, an ingenious use of garter stitch short rows and stockinette bands that will have you marvelling at its simplicity. These rich and seemingly complex patterns are broken down step by step into bite-size components that are easy to digest. Illustrations, diagrams and charts accompany each project, offering an invaluable guide for visual knitters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book with great patterns, 28 Feb 2011

This review is from: Knit. Sock. Love. (Paperback)
This is the first sock knitting book I have bought (or wanted to buy) and I just love it. The book is well produced with lovely photos, that, with a few exceptions, also give you great views of the socks.
I have just finished knitting (and am wearing as I write) the BFF cabled socks from the first section of the book. The instructions were clear and the socks have turned out beautifully. And they are only the third pair of socks I've ever knitted. The range of patterns is good, including some that appear pretty challenging if that's what you want. And none of them is whacky or unwearable.
I'm looking forward to working my way through the book.
The one additional thing that I would like is information on the yardage used for each size of sock. Most of the yarns are from US suppliers and in making substitutions it would be helpful to know exactly what yardage you need. But a minor quibble.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lady is for turning, 17 Nov 2011

Our daughter demands funky socks at regular intervals and these have not been found wanting. My wife, the knitter said she didn't want to turn fifty without learning how to turn a heel. She has now turned several. Some were quite challenging, she says, but she was justly proud of the results.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another sock book, 16 Mar 2011
By
This review is from: Knit. Sock. Love. (Paperback)
If you like Cookie's style then this is a nice collection of her patterns. Am I the only one though to be put off by sentimental titles? I looked at this book in a local book store and might have bought it but for the appalling, mawkish title.
