Book Description

15 Feb 2003
"Once upon a time... ...as a fair maiden lay weeping upon a cold tombstone, her heartfelt desire was suddenly made real before her: tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, her knight in shining armor had come to rescue his damsel in distress.... A Knight in Shining Armor Jude Deveraux's beloved bestseller has captivated readers the world over; now in a special edition featuring new material, this timeless love story greets a new generation. Abandoned by her lover, thoroughly modern Dougless Montgomery finds herself alone and brokenhearted in an old English church. She never dreamed that a love more powerful than time awaited her there...until Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, a sixteenth-century knight, appeared. Drawn to him by a bond so sudden and compelling that it defied reason, Dougless knew that Nicholas was nothing less than a miracle: a man who would not seek to change her, who found her perfect just as she was. But she could not know how strong were the chains that tied them to the past -- or the grand adventure that lay before them.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like romance and time travel...read this! 19 May 2005
By Sue Lewendon VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the second book I have had the sheer delight to read by this very talented author. The first was High Tide and it was so completely different that I can hardly believe that this was written by the same hand. Unlike High Tide, (which is also well worth taking a look at), this has a time travel aspect that is simply to die for!
Not only do we get the delicious Nicholas Stafford to come forward to modern day, but we also see our heroine travel back to the Elizabethan era too. The research gone into to write this very accurate tale must have been very extensive and it was well worth it!
The story begins with the heroine, (Dougless), travelling to England on what she thinks will be a dream holiday with her boyfriend, who she thinks is going to propose. But things aren't quite what she expected and she finds herself stranded in the small English village of Ashburton without a passport, clothes or money. Distraught at the prospect of having to ask for more help from her rich family, she goes into the church and collapses at the foot of a stone tombstone crying as she has never done before.
She begs for someone to help her and send her a Knight in shining armour, and wouldn't you know it? That's right! Enter the georgeous Nicholas! Dressed in said shining armour, he tries to calm down this hysterical woman, much to her annoyance. Just what she needs right now, a weirdo dressed in old fashioned garb and pretending to be a real Knight!
Although she doesn't believe a word he says about where he came from, she decides that maybe he does need a little help after nearly walking straight out in front of a bus! They reluctantly strike up a bargain with each other. If she will help him discover why he is here, he will help her by paying her way home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best novel I have ever read! 8 Jan 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was my first and still most favourite JD book. Dougless is a bit of a wimp to start with and after being abandoned by her horrid partner, she prays for a knight in shining armour and hey presto - Nicholas Stafford appears. He is gorgeous and has travelled from the 16th century and is convinced she is a witch. Then begins the adventure of their lives to prove he was not a traitor to the queen. The problem is the longer he stays here, the more they fall in love.

This is a combination of a love story, with a bit of history and detective work rolled in.

Without giving the ending away, this book will make you laugh, shout out and cry. I have loaned it to all my girl friends who agreed this was a fantastic read and for me, an absolute gem of a story. A good book is always one you will re-read again and again - this is one of them. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jude Devreaux's Best 9 Aug 2003
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I came across this book by total accident and was hooked from the first page. Trying to revover from a quarrel, our (American) heroine goes into a quiet English church to recover her composure. Whilst there, she wishes for a knight in shining armour - somebody should have told her to be careful what you wish for, you might get it!. She does, going back to Tudor times (my one carp about this book is that pecan trees do not grow in the UK and in Tudor times there was no way to import them - so how could she make pecan nut ice cream?) to meet her knight and prove him innocent of the treason of which he is accused. I found the funniest scenes in the book to be when Nicholas (the knight)comes back to today and has to cope with modern dress!
This is a great book to save for a cold winter's night, a box of chocolates and a glass of wine and, if you are feeling under the weather, it is guaranteed to raise your spirits!

2.0 out of 5 stars Ughoo! 22 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
All I can say is Wow! When I began reading "romance" novels again, this one was listed on pretty much all the lists as "one of the best" romance novels. I bought it several months ago and couldn't get past the first few 100 pages. Then, after reading a couple of hundred romance novels, decided to give it another chance. I couldn't get more than 1/3 of the way through so I read another couple of hundred books. Then, I finally decided I had to finish the book because, after all, so many reviewers couldn't be that far off base. Well, I'm finished and it just didn't do it for me.

I could never get caught up in the personas of Nicholas or Dougless. She was a doormat and although he was sweet, that's just what he was - sweet. The book never really got past that aspect of his character - a sweet, womanizer who did eventually fall hopelessly in love with Dougless but... I'm just really confused about all the 4 and 5 star ratings for this book. Normally, my opinions fall pretty close to the majority of reviewers or at least in the middle. I am, however, going to give Jude Deveraux another chance to woo me. She deserves it because so many people think she's so great.

5.0 out of 5 stars the first and best!! 30 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was the first Jude Deveraux book that I had ever read...and the best!! I couldn't put it down, even when I was feeling the heartbreak that Dougless was feeling. I felt every single emotion in this story. I was laughing and crying all night long, I just couldn't put it down. When I finished the book, I sat there and just basked in the afterglow of the incredible story. Jude Deveraux definitely has the key into the world of romance. Keep them coming!!
