This picture book has some of the most utterly beautiful illustrations I've ever seen. They're wonderfully imaginative, too, showing clearly (without any clunky textual explanation) how the little boy protagonist uses his imagination to turn bedtime into an exciting adventure - so for instance, the layout during bathtime shows the little knight swimming with lots of fish and other sea-creatures but also includes a floating tap hidden in the page as a sign of what's really going on.
It's pretty much the perfect book for any little kid who loves knights and castles. (And are there any little kids who don't? I'm sure there must be, but I haven't met them yet.) My little boy adores it. My one reservation, the first time we read it together, was that I worried the pictures - while stunning by any standards - used such a limited color palette, I wasn't sure he was getting the full effect of them as clearly as if they'd used more distinct colors to make each detail stand out. I think I was wrong about that, though - he points out hidden details every time we read it now, and asks for it to be read again and again!
I got a free copy of this book (as I share a publisher with the author), but I'll definitely be buying extra copies for friends' children.
