A Doorway into History 17 April 2006
Format:Hardcover
What more can I say? When I found this book as a child I discovered the world of historical fiction. I was hooked! Ronald Welch transformed the past for me, into something to be read about, savoured, and re-read!

Philip D'Aubigney is the son of a baron in the Crusader kingdom. We first meet him as an excitable youth. But after the disastrous Battle of Hatin, and the deaths of his uncle, brother and father, Philip is shaped into a worldly-wise man.

In his adventures Philip meets Saladin, Richard the Lionheart, and the legendary leader of the Assassins. Tired of the wars in the East, he returns to his ancestral home in Britain.

This amazing book became the first in a series by Ronald Welch on the Carey family. Through these books we trace the history of Great Britain. While much of it is idealised, for those like me who needed a push to read these were defining works of fiction.

If you can get your hands on any of the books, do so!!

This is Carnegie (Children Fiction) medal winning stuff (in 1974). It is intelligent, quality writting like they don't do any more. It is the first of the Aubrey family series of historical novels and perhaps the best. This author (a history teacher) deserves wider recognition!

It is written in easy prose that 8-12+ year olds will manage well, it rolls along in a fast pace with good attitudes and character values. It captures the imagination and will sell history forever to your kids. It does not shy away from sensitive issues such as slavery, death, commerce and politics, but deals with them sensitively and accurately.

Highly recommended as a book and as a series. Pity it's so hard to find. I had to order it through the county library system, but worth it.

Knight Crusader 28 July 2004
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book that covers the war between the Christian Kingdom of Outreamer and Saladin. Very enjoyable, and packed with historical material. I'm only glad I got a copy of this when my local library sold it on. Although it's nominally a 'Young Adults' book, like Andre Norton (SF) and Rosemary Sutcliffe it has much for the older reader to enjoy.
