Another fantastic Score by John Powell, 23 Aug 2010
John Powell is going to find it hard to beat his amazing score for 'How to Train Your Dragon' which was released earlier this year, but he's certainly given it a good go with this creative score for 'Knight and Day'.
Obviously this film is going to need a very different type of score compared to 'HTTYD', and perhaps one which isn't going to be as entertaining on CD. But there is something about Powell's music which allows you to easily listen through one of his scores, without even the undertones and ambient tracks becoming boring. Powell blends electronic textures and beats with orchestral and world instrument sounds to create a dynamic and fluent musical language for the film.
A real highlight is the cue named 'Bull Run'. This features typical Spanish guitar playing but then evolves into more heroic moments featuring some classic John Powell melodies and choppy strings.
Overall, a really great score, I haven't seen the film, so my review is based purely on the music as an album experience. A very enjoyable experience, the only downside being that some of the fantastic themes only get a single performance, and I would love to hear them come back. The other downside is that the orchestra sounds fairly small compared to some of Powell's other scores, but the film perhaps doesn't require such a bloated orchestra, as say one of Powell's animation scores. This leads me to award the album 8/10.
