Product Description

Product Description

Richard Villar, guest of the BBC's Hospital Watch, is a world-famous surgeon. He is also a hero. For much of his career Richard Villar has worked with the SAS, in the developing world, and amidst conflict zones that include Lebanon, Bosnia, the Middle East, Northern Ireland and Central America. Knife Edge is his extraordinary true story.

Although a surgeon by training, Richard Villar still had to pass the SAS Selection test, reckoned to be the toughest anywhere. Then came his passport to the world's trouble spots, caring for soldiers and innocent civilians wherever he was asked to go. He tells of gunfire outside his consulting room, the dangers of landmines, of how to deal with perilous bleeding in the desert and his fear of a suicidal operation during the Falklands War. Richard Villar's experiences as a doctor are unique, the story he recounts truly remarkable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humbling and Uplifting 29 Jun 2014

Bought this book on a whim - I read it in two days - absolutely humbling yet uplifting at the same time. The story of a life well lived. The compassion and camaraderie displayed during his SAS years was inspirational. Yes Mr Villar I did take your advice and donate the cost of a couple of gin and tonics to charity. Not much compared to the authors contribution to his fellow man.

Very interesting, although rather boring for someone who has not served in HM Forces or working in a medical environment

5.0 out of 5 stars The other side of conflict! 5 Mar 2014

Well worth reading by anyone interested in how military medics perform in war zones but also an interesting insight into how the author faces up to and deals with the harrowing realities of conflict and it's aftermath. Amazingly after his time with the SAS he continued to work in hostile areas for various charities putting his own welfare at risk to help the less fortunate. It makes you realise what a sheltered existence we lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply excellent! 1 Mar 2014

I knew Ricky Villar during my own service with 21 SAS Regiment, but lost contact when he departed for Hereford, and 22 SAS. His life certainly became seriously interesting after heading west. Ricky is a great bloke, and an excellent doctor. This is a wonderful account of a quite extraordinary life, lived literally on a knife edge.

Good-luck mate - Best wishes - David Black.

5.0 out of 5 stars a most enjoyable read... 12 Jan 2014

.... And quite educational too! I found myself trying to explain to the wife the different types of damage gunshots can cause, but to my disappointment, she wasn't interested.

I don't often read books I'm afraid to say but this one had me grabbed from day one.

Well recommended if you enjoy war scenarios with lots of medical descriptions chucked in.

How a surgeon unsure at the beginning was able to undertake the challenge of his life and gain experiences we can only dream of doing

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book 14 Nov 2013

I really enjoyed this book on a number of levels. Reading about Special Forces is interesting in it's own right, but all the more so without macho posturing and self aggrandisement. Add to that an inspiring story of someone practicing medicine in extremely contrasting places and circumstances I was left moved and impressed by a really inspiring story. So much so I ordered his next book.
