Product Description

Product Description

Knife Edge is the new novel from acclaimed writer, Paul Adam, a gripping thriller focusing on the power of the supermarkets and the exploitation of migrant labour. In London, a newly-arrived Kurdish immigrant is brutally murdered by Turkish people-traffickers. The dead man's wife, Irena, the key witness to the killing, flees to East Anglia where she disappears into the murky world of gangmasters and illegal foreign workers. Then three people contract typhoid and the only link between them seems to be the supermarket chain where they bought their food. Joe Verdi, crime correspondent for a national newspaper, goes undercover as a migrant worker to try to find Irena. But he's not the only one looking for her - the Turks are also on her trail. Meanwhile, Joe's colleague, Ellie Mason, is following up the typhoid outbreak. As the two reporters' investigations come together in a heart-stopping climax, the shocking truth about our industrialised system of food production is uncovered. There is a price to pay for cheap food - and sometimes that price is people's lives.

Good read 23 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
Despite the crusading theme of the book Paul Adam is to be congratulated in taking a topical and emotive subject and turning it into an immensely readable book. And one thing is certain: the reader will never regard the supermarket chicken portions in quite the same light again. As to the inhumane treatment of immigrant workers, we universally deplore it yet cheap food to the table will ever blunt unified complaint.

This latest offering is thought provoking, well written and a must for all his followers.

unputdownable 27 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
This is about the 4th Paul Adam book I've read...I've loved them all and this one didn't disappoint! As with some of his other books, the story line is brilliantly researched and incredibly topical - the all powerful supermarkets, illegal immigrants and potential disease epidemics. You feel as you read it that it could all be happening right now - frighteningly believable! The main characters are great too - funny, interesting, quirky and real. It really was a compulsive read, and one of those books you're disappointed to finish. I really hope there's another one from Adam soon!

Exploitation 14 Aug 2010

I could not put this book down. A really tightly written thriller which has opened my eyes to what goes on in the world of agriculture and Supermarkets. The sense of location and desperation is so well described. A story which could almost be a docudrama.
