Product Description

Mojo ****

"..it is the added 20 minutes of live tracks that make this a repurchase. Best is a version of the title track recorded in Copenhagen, which builds the drama with long, trippy opening and free-form sax climax. It shows how the quartet's confidence to let the music breathe on-stage has grown."

"John Leckie has added depth and detail to lend a more complexly wrought studio texture to the original record's more austere charm. If something is lost, something is gained too, as Leckie's soundboard moves Portico's inventive jazz/classical noodlings even closer to Radiohead, to whom they were compared on original release."

CD Description

Re-release of Portico Quartet’s 2008 Mercury Music Prize nominated album, remixed by John Leckie and featuring three bonus tracks. Portico Quartet, still in their early twenties, formed five years ago from two sets of school friends – standing out with their fresh, unclichéd resynthesis and reinvention of music that’s both pleasingly familiar and thrillingly new, like World Music from the future. The mix of ethereal saxophone, flying saucer-like Hang (imagine an otherworldly steel drum), clattering drums and earthy double-bass gives their music it’s inimitable, beautiful sound. Whilst Portico Quartet’s largely intuitive music references jazz and African music it’s the Hang inspired trance-like repetitive patterns that propel the band into stranger pastures: invoking Philip Glass and Steve Reich’s gamelan inspired minimalism. The line-up of the band is Duncan Bellamy (drums), Milo Fitzpatrick (double bass), Nick Mulvey (hang and percussion) and Jack Wyllie (soprano, tenor saxophones and electronics). From a grassroots start in 2005, busking on the South Bank of London’s Thames, their reputation spread swiftly. In 2007 Knee-Deep In The North Sea was released. This was a turning point: the album attracted attention from DJs, bloggers and critics of every stripe, and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize. Knee-Deep was also Time Out’s Jazz, Folk and World music album of the year for 2007. The album has been remixed by John Leckie (The Stone Roses, Radiohead, Muse and producer of Portico Quartet’s 2009 album, Isla.

I'd been listening to the original 2007 release of this on Spotify for the last few weeks and loving it. With this re-mixed re-release Spotify saw fit to remove the old version and re-place it with this. Still good tunes of course but I'm not a fan of the new production - overblown bass and loss of intricacy of the original version, I'm off to try and track down an original copy of this on CD now...

By the way I've no idea why any comparison could possibly be made to Radiohead for this - not even vaguely similar???

Get On Your Knees! 20 Feb 2011
By Mr. B. A. D. Plowman VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
"Knee Deep in the North Sea" originally came out a few years ago and was correctly lauded as a contemporary jazz classic. This re-release is essentially the same set of tunes but they have been remixed to sonic perfection by Mr John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead...)

The production here is excellent - there is now more space and depth in the sound. The haunting tones of the hang drum shimmer like an amber sunset. Not a single pluck of the bass is lost. Crisp drums skitter and scatter. The saxophone is bruised and aching. Many of the songs evoke travel and reflective journeys (Steve Reich definitely an influence). There is much blissful repetition to be heard. Tunes such as the title track, "Steps in the Wrong Direction", "Pompidou" and "Prickly Pear" are wonderfully catchy and melodious and occasionally playful. A joy to listen to.

The bonus tracks here are also more than welcome - cosmic and loopy live renditions that give a good flavour of what the band are like in concert.

Here's hoping that this re-release will introduce Portico Quartet to a wider audience. Their music is both experimental and accessible and demands repeated listening.

A GREAT JOURNEY 12 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When the magnificent "Isla" came out, iwas thrilled, this album was issued first, and via this reissue we can enjoy the music even more.
The production is first class, with the bass and bang drum to the fore, the music has tge feeling of a great journe.
With the three extra tracks ,this very long and complicated album makes joyous listening,in particular the Jan Garbarek influenced Saxaphobe playing of Jack Wylie, the bass player is Mic Fitzpatrick and has that uber cool ouevre that all young bassists these days seem to have.
Duncan Bellemy handles the drums and bang(Tuned parcussion)well as does NIck Mulvey,
The cover is impressive, and is akin to what you would find on Rune Grammafon.
So,in sumnation a fine album that bodes well for the future.
