5.0 out of 5 stars Jane Fonda in an Oscar-winning performance, 11 Oct 2005
By Kona (Emerald City) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Respected businessman,Tom Gruneman, has disappeared, and his friend, detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland), is on the case. There is only one clue: An obscene letter written by Tom to a New York City call girl named Bree (Jane Fonda). Klute finds her and enters her tawdry world; gradually they fall for each other. As one clue leads to another, two of Bree's friends are killed, and it's clear that she is being stalked by a madman.

Fonda certainly deserved her Best Actress Oscar for this raw and powerful role. Bree is bold and confident on the job, but terrified of feeling any real emotion. She is vulnerable and afraid for her life, and even more afraid of actually caring for Klute. Sutherland is very good as the poker-faced detective who is initially repulsed by Bree's life. Roy Scheider has a small but memorable role as a ruthless pimp. Michael Small's eerie soundtrack is guaranteed to give you chills, and the taut script will keep you on the edge of your seat. This scary thriller (with no violence) has lost none of its intensity since 1971; it delivers top-notch performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Thriller, 7 Feb 2007
By I. Thomson "The music, book and film fanatic" (Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Klute is the first of the Pakula conspiracy trilogy.

Detective John Klute, played by Donald Sutherland is on the search for a missing person-his best friend who enlists the assistance of a prositute, known by Bree Daniels, played by Jane Fonda. Bree is a call girl or was one until recently, but belittled by the sudden disapperance and death of her friend, also gets tied in...

Klute is a thriller, where it keeps you guessing, how or who is behind these vicious crimes of justice. Pakula hides the criminal from view, with clues arising from mainly people living in the underworld, often working alongside Bree, where the personalities are put on show with detail.

Jane Fonda plays her breakthrough role, studing the art of the business from real life live-in pimps and those associated. Daniels is protrayed as being as weary, moody, lively and always injective to tell the truth that Klute is assigned to ask for. Bree also finds her life is at the tail end of the telephone wire, where anyone can call at anytime.

Donald Sutherland plays John Klute, who is protrayed as being passive, frustated but also soothing and fearing.

Klute is a terrific thriller, that stands the test of time, enjoy it and watch it, but always pay attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars a woman and a detective in a dilemma , 23 Jul 2008
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
a womans dilemma
if moral ambiguity ever was questioned relevantly and then answered in a level headed manner then klute will be one of the best movies to have pertrayed it as it takes prostitution ,illicit surveillance and murder in the evil milieu of a morally bankrupt metropolis and turns it inside out to find a good aspect to all the resident evil ,it triumphs with fonda as the liberated call girl but also sutherland as the stubborn investigator who is prepared to go to any length to redeem himself and find the truth ,fortunately the art of the writer and the perforfermors is coherent and meets in an astonishing verisimilitude to create a timeless classic within an entertaining thriller ,a marvel of a movie with its dark ,languid ,lyrical narration which never sacrifices realism for comfort ,must see
