Product Description

Product Description

The new Image S4i Rugged Headphones utilize tough rubber moldings and an all-weather design to protect the legendary Klipsch sound from Mother Nature's bad side. Neither rain, sleet, snow, nor concrete jungle can stop the award winning acoustics and live music experience of the Image S4i Rugged headphones. An extra-large, 3-button remote lets you precisely control iPhone calls and music whether you're wearing bulky gloves or are simply on the go. And while the headphones' exterior is built tough, these in-ear headphones have patented oval ear tips to keep you comfortable. Rock the Klipsch Image S4i Rugged earbuds in yellow, orange, blue or red

When it comes to comfort, no one beats Klipsch headphones. Unlike circular-shaped ear tips that put stress on the pressure points inside the ear, Klipsch's exclusive oval ear tips naturally fit the contours of your ear canals, providing comfortable long-term wear. These lightweight ear tips also offer superior noise isolation, blocking out almost all ambient noise and provide excellent bass. Because we want you to be rocking out to your favorite tunes for a long, long time, the seal also allows you to enjoy your music at lower, safer volumes

In addition to unequaled comfort, these exclusive ear tips create a perfect acoustic seal to produce Klipsch's renowned, high-performance sound. At the heart of every Klipsch product is over 66 years of audio expertise beating strong. Our commitment to no-compromise performance has made us the preferred choice of top cinema operators, a leader in stereo and home theater sound and a premium name in headphones. The Image S4i Rugged's audio works with virtually any device that has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack; however, the mic and three-button remote support select Apple products. Unlike other headsets, the S4i Rugged positions its mic and remote at the cable yoke to create a more natural feel when answering calls and controlling music. The highly intelligible, directional mic means you'll be heard crystal clear and won't have to worry about the external noise around you.

Box Contains

Four pairs of different-sized patented oval ear tips

Look and Feel
To get the obvious out of the way, these are some of the most stylish headphones I’ve seen recently. The striking colour is refreshing amongst its black styled peers and that now hugely imitable red style. A bit more fluorescence would have been nice. The remote looks and feels excellent. I don’t know why efforts to have a remote are always only meeting Iphone requirements, maybe there is some patent hogging going on. But actually on the new android phones the play button will stop and start music, double tapping it will skip to the next track. Many reviews say how heavy the remote unit is, but there is a clip supplied for the wire which alleviates this issue.

The other major qualm about the S4 range is the durability, these have a reputation for not lasting too long. My previous pair of the original S4s lasted for one year though. I bought these not expecting them to last in a way, and the rugged part of the name doesn’t necessarily mean the wire connections are more sturdy, just that the seams are fairly protected against maybe water intrusion.

I have found the fit with the supplied tips to be not quite right, either too small or two big, I am more inclined to blame my ears, though another size would have been welcome. The ear pieces have very small needle like outputs, unlike all the other brand headphones, so prevents you using a previous pair of correctly fitting tips.

My headphone credentials are: creative ep630, vmoda vibe, Klipsch s4, Beats, MeElectronics sp131, and ME Electronics Mduo. Relative to all of those bar the previous klipsch S4 set, these are much more orientated around the treble and middle range of the spectrum, and it does them very well indeed.

Good sound, quite neutral
Very good sound isolation; very little leakage and the seal keeps out background noise, especially the deep tips.
Easy to use remote.
Solid feeling contruction.
Volume controls are ipod only.
Remote can pull on earphones, also hangs low, mic use requires a hand to lift it to one's mouth.
The deep tips can be uncomfortable at first.

Based in Ireland but living in remote africa I purchased a pair of klipsch headphones prior to my departure on a 12 month contract 1 year ago. I first purchased the s5i rugged headphones, initially I found them excellent, loved the sound, weight, comfort etc and used them regularly (2-3 times per week) for cycling, hiking etc unfortunately after three months the sound went in one ear phone. Thinking that perhaps it was a once off product failure (given the extremely high price and consistently positive reviews) and as I was unable to return them for repair (living in a country with no post service to speak of) I took the risk and ordered a second pair sending them to a colleague in the uk who was coming out to visit my work site.,, this time I opted for the s4i. Again the sound etc was great however after 4 months of moderate usage one earphone packed up again. I think the problem is with the headphone plug, as if you manipulate the cable at the plug end sound returns but goes again if you let go. This should be rectified by klipsch, it is entirely unacceptable to charge extortionate prices for a defective product that breaks after mild use - never mind the cheek to call it "rugged"....

Not for Running 31 Oct 2013
By Daisy Woodside - Published on Amazon.com

I researched these headphones extensively and was sure that I'd made the right purchase. I run long distances (10-13 miles) and just wanted a no-nonsense pair of headphones that would stay put no matter what. These were great when I first got them. They fit perfectly in my ears and the sound quality is the best I've had in any pair of headphones. The real problems started when I started to sweat. The rubber in-ear part got extremely slippery. They kept gradually falling out of my ears, and wouldn't stay "wedged" in place. I frequently had to shove them in every 2 minutes or so, which got insanely frustrating and distracting. The sound control strip that sits near the chest didn't bother me until the earbuds got sweaty; at that point it seemed like the weight of it was just pulling the things out like they were covered in butter. Around mile 4 or 5, I just gave up and pulled them out all together. I'm very disappointed. Such a great pair of headphones that just don't perform past a certain point. These work great for light exercise and everyday use, but not for activities that involve impact or intense sweating.

Survived the laundry... isn't that awesome? 8 Sep 2012
By Agzam Ibragimov - Published on Amazon.com
I accidentally laundered them. 45 minutes in hot soapy water and another 40 minutes in a super hot dryer.
And they still work! That was least expected. Unbelievable! Even the mike works and all the buttons...

For the Galaxy S4 people 28 Nov 2013
By Jeepfreak - Published on Amazon.com
Very comfortable and they sound great to a casual listener. Just wanted to let the Android users know that the play button works as expected with device music and pandora on a Galaxy S4 active. However, the + and - buttons do not function for me.

Great sound. Physical design sucks. 30 Dec 2013
By T.Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
I want to love these. I really do. The sound is awesome. But the physical design drives me nuts. Specifically, the playback remote is too heavy and bulky, and the cord is too long. The size and weight of the remote, combined with the extra-long cord, cause lots of snags, earbuds falling out, and a persistent anxiety that my music could be jarringly interrupted at any moment, while I'm on the go.

GOOD:The sound is awesome. The noise isolation is wonderful, and the sound quality is top-notch--what you'd expect from an upper-tier sound company.

However, for my purposes, the physical design causes me to curse more than I'd like. I live in a major city, and I'm very mobile; I walk, I bus, I train, I jog, I lift, I climb. The point is: I use these headphones in many situations. And, after all, they're geared towards the active person, right?

The issue is that the heavy, bulky playback remote, combined with the extra-long cord, easily snags, which consequently results in the earbuds being yanked from my ears. You know what I'm talking about. When you're really getting into an excellent song on the train, you stand up to get off, the bulky remote and/or the cord gets caught on the arm rest, and the earbuds are yanked from your ears and flop around. If you're really unlucky, the extra long cord allows the earbuds to fall to the ground, possibly being stepped on. This happens way too often. Oh, and in that last situation, you can replace "arm rest" with anything from: backpack strap, jacket outer lining, my own arm, someone's purse as you're walking by, random object, etc.

Great sound. Horrible physical design.

Less than five months after purchasing it, the volume buttons have stopped functioning. Not so "rugged," it looks like. Very disappointing for a $100 pair of earbuds. Rating now dropped from two stars to one.

Great sound, good price. Very happy. 17 April 2013
By JimmyDreams - Published on Amazon.com
I'm not THAT picky about my headphones...I know what I like when it comes to sound, and I'm also honest about the fact that my ears at 48 simply don't hear what they did when I was 16. Having said that, these are my favorite headphones that I've had in a while. While they don't stand up to in a head-to-head comparison with my old Shure headphones, these didn't carry a $200 price tag!!

Treble is easy to get in a pair of headphones; it's bass that can be hard to duplicate. These headphones bring the bass like I haven't heard in a while. You need to shove them into your ears just a bit to get that big bass sound, but boy is it there! I also have no problem with these slipping out of my ears....once they're in, they stay!! These headphones come with 4 different sizes of earpieces, so one is bound to fit your ears. I classify these as noise-cancelling headphones, so they WILL block outside noise if worn correctly. (Be VERY careful if biking/running on roads, etc. A semi-truck or a Harley with straight pipes could sneak up on you if you're wearing these!!) :) I use these mostly for running and working around the house. The cord is plenty long enough and is rubbery without being sticky. The ONLY complaint I have with these headphone is the mic/volume control 'remote' on the cord: it's oversized which makes it easy to grab/feel, but it's just a tad too heavy. I can feel it pull down on the cord just a bit when I'm running. This is easily solved by running the cord through my shirt and letting the shirt take the weight, so it's not a deal-breaker. Or you can simply use the clip thats included. The included clip is a bit of a bummer because it uses a 'friction-S' method of holding on the the cord. (the cord is squished through an s-channel and stays in place with friction. This makes it almost impossible to change the position of the clip on the fly, but I guess once you have it where you want it, it certainly won't slip!! (hindrance or benefit, you decide.) The remote is SO oversized, in fact, that when using muscle memory from my old headphones, this remote seems positively HUGE. But I do like that the volume UP is a big, raised 'plus' sign, with volume down being a raised 'minus' sign. Once you know it's there, you can 'Helen Keller' the remote (actually 'read' the volume up/down buttons with your fingertips.) This is an advantage over other remotes which are usually so small that they're impossible to feel which button does what....not a problem with this big remote!

Overall, I find these to be very comfortable with no hot-spots from wearing them for long durations.

I bought these at Best Buy for $69.99, and am happy with the product. So far. Time will tell if the cord can stand up to running without shorting out (the most common problem I have with headphones).

I would give these headphones 5 stars, but I cannot overlook 'friction-s' gripper on the headphone clip and the weight of the remote.

UPDATE: The headphones finally failed with a short in the plug causing the right earbud to quit working.....17 days shy of 1 year of ownership. This past year has seen a fair amount of running, TONS of 'folding up and stuffing in my pocket' events, as well as countless violent 'yanks out of my ears as I get the cord caught on a tree branch' or something similar, and forcibly bending the plug while holding my iPad plaint games, etc. In short: these things have put up with some decent abuse and IMHO have survived very well. I will likely be buying the exact same pair tonight. YMMV, but I'm still impressed with these headphones.
