These are marvellous perfomances. The two CDs give us a complete Klemperer concert with the Berlin Philharmonic from 31st May 1964: Bach Suite No.3, Mozart Symphony No.29 and Beethoven Pastoral Symphony. Also included is the rehearsal of the first movement of the Beethoven in which Klemperer effectively de-Karajanizes the orchestra, getting the woodwind to play louder, for instance, and creating a much more open and balanced sound than they ever had under Karajan. Even if you already have Klemperer's EMI recordings of these works with the Philharmonia, you should get these Berlin accounts. They will be a revelation.
In the excellent booklet notes, there is quoted a very revealing statement by Werner Tharicen, principal timpanist at the time of this concert and a member of the orchestra from 1947 until 1984. He places Klemperer "up there alongside Furtwangler, the two really great conductors I have worked with". Ten years into Karajan's period this is revealing, to say the least!
