. . . this book is great. Kleinzeit (German for Small Time) ends up in hospital with a pain in his hypotenuse (it flashes from A to B) - which can be removed as its only there to keep his angle right. His subsequent adventures lead him via Orpheus, Death and yellow paper into doing somethin which he has to do (or which has to do him). Plays with our idea of things by getting inanimate objects to speak, by having Kienzeit going to where the music is and playing it, by substituting mathematical and musical terms for medical ones and other delightful devices. However, it's not all language games - it hints at the other reality we can't make sense of but is somehow important. If you read it too fast you miss the sheer poetry which underlies the tour-de-force of crafty prose. The most moving part, for me, is when Death gives Kleinzeit the ability to once (just once) draw a perfect circle. The first Hoban book I read and which started me on a love affair with all the others. Worth reading if you liked Riddley Walker or if you're looking for an easier way in to Hoban's work.

I was lent the book by a good friend. It is unlike anything I have read before, very off beat but seemed to make sense. I laughed more out loud to this book than many I have read in years (and I am a miserable sod). If you have ever looked for the wiring under the board, this book might enlighten you. Those that read it and hate it will not thank me, those that read and enjoy it will re-read it and tell their friends.

Its a little funny writing a review of a book I first read about 20 years ago.

This was the first Russel Hoban book I had read and started me into his other works - Lion of ..., Riddley Walker, Medusa Frequency, Turtle Diary etc.

What I particularly enjoyed was his ability to combine great story telling with imaginative, language creation. Probably this work does it better and makes it more easily accessible than some of his other works. If like me you tried reading Riddly Walker and found it has almost impossible to understand without reading it loud and listening to your own voice, you'll find this much easier and no less rewarding.

I've recommended this book to dozens of friends and often lent them my copy, only to get some excuse why they were unable to return it. if you like sharing your books, i suggest you buy several copies ... you'll want to reread it and even your best friends are going to want to keep it!
