Book Description

25 Mar 2011 Taschen Basic Art Series
Designated as "degenerate" by the Nazis, Paul Klee (1879-1940) is today considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His works stand out for the variety in their forms of artistic expression. His Tunisian water-colours depicting landscape, architecture and, above all, the North African light of this Mediterranean land constitute the true beginning of Klee's painting career. Although these paintings still fall under the heading of 'objective,' they already exhibit indications of his tendency toward abstraction and a language of forms. Geometrical figures and hieroglyphic elements characterize the majority of these works, which for this reason seem reminiscent of 'naive' and playful children's painting. In reality, however, Klee's paintings have their roots in theoretical considerations, their recurrent symbols conveying personal and at times political content. Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Art Series" features: a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist; approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions; and, a concise biography.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super book 22 Oct 2013

This is great value, and a really comprehensive book. I am familiar with the smaller format art books from Taschen, and assumed that this would be a hardback version of one of these, so am pleasantly surprised.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very bad translation from German 4 Oct 2013

According to this book Paul Klee was born in 1979 and was a "housesesehusband".

It's like it's been through Google translate. The sentence structures are utterly bizarre in places (often nonsensical) and there are a tonne of typos. I'm surprised the publishing house actually let this out so uncorrected.

Beyond that, the book is a bit strange. The author takes the view point of "everyone says this, but I say differently" without giving much of a reason why. Irritatingly some artworks are given a different name in the text to their picture caption elsewhere, so in several cases you have to assume (or Google) to make sure you're looking at the right picture. There's also an assumption you know about art history as people and events are introduced to the biography without a nod to their place or background.

For 95 pages there's not a lot of information. The text is very large font in double line spacing, and there's a lot of white space. So nice layout and easy to read, but not much to say.

The book is saved from one star as it does contain a good amount of nicely presented Klee works. It's a better picture book than biography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your moneys worth............ 13 Mar 2012

Generally,an art book is all about the pictures.Unless I am doing research, the text is a secondary concern for me,if it is good...thank-you...if not...oh well. This book does not make any promises,it is brief(96 pages)but you get your moneys worth. It has sixty-six color images,of which thirty are full page, sixteen are half page and six of these are close to actual size or larger.Four of Klee's early etchings are reproduced, two shown as full page and a fraction less than actual size.
If you own two or more books about Klee then the photos and historical facts in the text may not have anything new, however,as an inexpensive hardcover with good reproductions,I do not see a lot of disappointment here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Partsch and Taschen. 16 May 2011
By Atlantic - Published on Amazon.com
I have a few Klee books and picked this one up while browsing in a book store. If you like Klee, I think it's a great little intro and biography.

What I like best about it is the print quality, the images are bright, colorful, large, including some I had never seen before. I also think Taschen did a better job in this book than some of the other publishers did in my more expensive Klee books.

A welcome addition to my art library. At such a fantastic price, I think I'll be adding a few more books from this series.
