Format:Audio CD
Klaus Nomi was a mad German singer & performance artist who flourished in NYC in the late 70s/early 80s, in that hothouse atmosphere of clubs and gigs that created Keith Haring & co. Nomi was a one-off - an opera & sci-fi fan who mixed up all his favourite obsessions with some overblown post-glam rock. The results (on this album, and his only other release, Simple Man) are awesome: melodramatic classical arias segue into ridiculous rinky-dink rock & roll numbers, all delivered in Klaus's clipped German accent. His best-known track, Total Eclipse, is the centrepiece of this album. Seriously: this is a must for every self-respecting deviant household. Stick it in yer basket now!

The album opens with Keys of Life, a lovely mix of twittering electronics and Nomi’s soprano chant. His vocal range is beautifully demonstrated on Lightning Strikes where it switches to falsetto on the refrain, and on The Twist, a soulful, atmospheric number ending in squalls of manic laughter. Nomi Song has a catchy hook, lovely synth lines and snatches of rousing choral vocals, while The Cold Song is an impressive operatic piece and Total Eclipse is a magical blend of rock and classical music. The highlight of the album is the Saint Saens composition Samson and Delilah, sensitively interpreted by Nomi over the most inspired instrumentation, a listening experience that leaves you breathless, before it ends with an explosion of electronic noise. Klaus Nomi is a successful marriage of rock, pop and various classical styles.

this album is one of two Klaus nomi studio cds to ever be released and is probably his greatest work. with songs like total eclipse and the nomi song its rhythm is soothing in certain cases. if you like bands such as sparks or David bowie then you might like this.
