"A huge amount of information." (Birmingham Post, Monday 19th November 2007)

Product Description

Who can resist the charm of a kitten, those energetic, curious creatures whose cuteness factors fall somewhere between adorable and irresistible? But as animal shelters across the country can attest, those enchanting balls of fluff quickly mature into full-grown cats with their own requirements for healthy, happy lives.

Kittens For Dummies is your source for understanding what you can expect if you decide to welcome a high energy and high maintenance four-legged friend into your home. You'll not only figure out if you're ready to fit a kitty into your lifestyle, but also how to go about

 • Adopting or buying the right kitten for you
 • Making sure your home is kitten-proof
 • Introducing your new pet to children and other pets
 • Preventing and treating feline illnesses
 • Dealing with behavioral issues
 • Rescuing an orphaned kitten

Books abound about kitten care. Unlike many of them – those that seem to require a veterinary medicine degree to figure out – Kittens For Dummies explains everything in plain, everyday English. And like the subject itself, this handy reference is full of fun. In entertaining, informative language, the friendly guide gives you the real deal on

 • Doling out plenty of love, attention, and patience
 • Deciding whether kitty will be allowed to explore the outdoors
 • Making your kitten comfy with the right supplies and accessories
 • Knowing how often to ring the dinner bell
 • Recognizing emergencies that call for quick trips to the veterinarian
 • Locating qualified caretakers when you travel
 • Nurturing kitty into adulthood

Before you take the giant leap into kitten ownership – a wonderful and sometimes chaotic world – check out the expert advice in a resource that's bound to become as constant a companion as your purr-fect pet.

This book was brilliant. I couldn't recommend any other book more for first time kitten owners. I read it in advance of getting my 2 kittens and it really was amazing. I learned everything I wanted to know which included - whether a kitten was right for me, how to kitten-proof my home, all about setting a safe area for them, what to look for to do with illnesses, a little bit of cat psychology basics - how to interpret some things they do, behaviour problems, bonding with the kitten, keeping the kitten entertained, first aid for kittens - and lots more.

It's definitely aimed at beginners but it contains so much useful information that I'll be referring to it for years to come.

There are two issues i find with this book - firstly it's written in America, so all the prices, medicines and legislations are american, this is bearable but perhaps not the best book for the UK. Having already acquired my young kitten however what i found was that the book was mostly geared to people considering getting a kitten and so it skimmed over things like neutering and claw clipping too lightly (which is a must btw), for example it told me the health benefits of neutering my cat but not at what age i should look at getting her done, or even at what age i should start allowing her out! Its an OK book if you are hypothetically wanting a cat as it addresses the major issues concerned with getting one (where from / what type / bringing it home etc)- just not the issues of how to look after them. The most helpful piece of advice was to never have a single cat - always have 2, and on the basis of this i adopted a second kitten very soon afterwards. Although there was undoubtedly initial friction, i followed the books advice of putting them in adjacent rooms and within 3 days found they were playing underneath the door. Compared to people i've known with single cats it has made a difference to their behaviour and i feel much better leaving them when i'm out for work during the day.

Really nice read. I would definitely recommend Kittens for Dummies, I have just gotten my first kitten.... OH my gosh I never knew that there was soooo much to learn. This book helped me every step of the way and it is now week 2 and with the help of this book and my Vets advice I was able to introduce my new kitten with my 5 year old resident Spaniel with success.

Make sure the food contains an absolute minimum of .04 percent taurine, an essential amino acid required by kitties. (I wont feed canned food with less than .07 percent taurine or dry food with less than .16 percent taurine.) "e;

If you dont want a finicky eater later, rotate several flavors and brands. This will keep your kitten from developing a preference for a single flavor of cat food. Believe it or not, switching foods can also help prevent future food allergies and deficiencies. "e;
